    Budgam, Feb 24:

    Even as there is no report of any outbreak of the dreaded Avian Influenza or Bird Flu disease from anywhere in India the states have been asked to remain in a state of preparedness by Government of India.

    The recent reports of outbreaks of the disease in neighbouring Pakistan have made the authorities to re-assess preparedness to meet any eventuality like an outbreak of the disease that is communicable to humans.

    At a high level meeting held at Jammu the preparedness of the state to meet any eventuality like outbreak of the disease was reviewed.

    Following which the Animal Husbandry Department has taken several steps to maintain alertness so that no unusual deaths in poultry populations go unnoticed.

    The department has planned another awareness campaign that will be carried out throughout the valley.

    In his inaugural address to a gathering of farmers and officials Dr SP Sharma, Director Animal Husbandry Department Kashmir said that while his department is leaving nothing to chance the people too need to remain vigilant.

    He sought their cooperation ensuring that no unusual mortality in poultry birds goes unreported.

    Asstt Commissioner Revenue Budgam, Geelani speaking on the occasion said that the district administration is committed to deal with the situation and leave no stone unturned to protect life and property of people.

    Dr F A Kaloo, Dy Director, AH Department in his lucid presentation on the disease, threw light on the historical background, epidemiology, symptoms, control and containment strategies.
    He said that the disease has been haunting the human race since the beginning of 20th century taking heavy human toll. He said that in the eventuality of an outbreak of the disease the affected area is to be ringed up to 3 kms radius where all the poultry birds will have to be killed, disposed off scientifically and in the 7 kms radius outer to the infected zone all the poultry population shall have to be vaccinated.
    Adding that from the infected zone no to and fro movement of people will be allowed till the disease is brought under control.

    The department is continuously monitoring the situation and is regularly collecting blood and other biological samples from the valley?s poultry population and referring the same to the RDDL, Jallandar and High Security Animal Disease Laboratory, Bhopal. He said the department has sufficient trained manpower and all the necessary materials are being procured and stored to deal with such an eventuality.

    Dr M S Peer, Chief AH Officer, Budgam discussed the importance of immunization of poultry and other animals against various diseases. Dr K A Zargar, Extension Officer, Publicity Wing addressing the farmers laid emphasis on adoption of scientific farming practices for improving production and productivity.

    He also dwelt at length on the trainings in scientific poultry rearing to unemployed youth being imparted by the department so as to help them in setting up their units.

    The participants were provided with printed information bulletins, brochures, leaflets covering various poultry and animal diseases. The Chief AH Officer also distributed free of cost veterinary medicines among the participant farmers.
