Water level in Orissa river recedes

Bhubaneswar (PTI): The water level in major rivers across Orissa receded and the weather improved as relief and rehabilitation operation in flood-ravaged areas of the state gained momentum.

However, the death toll due to floods mounted to five on Saturday with a 65-year old man being swept away by the waters of river Baitarani in Dhamnagar area of Bhadrak district, official sources said.

With two additional IAF helicopters engaged in relief work, about 250 quintals of food packets and other essential items were distributed among flood-affected people in the worst hit Balasore district, the sources said.

About 500 quintals of relief material, including food items, were rushed by train from Jajpur Road to Kantai in Balasore district for distribution in areas affected by floods which had claimed five lives, the sources said.

Relief operation also picked up in four other districts of Mayurbhanj, Bhadrak, Jajpur and Kendrapara which were affected by floods in Subarnarekha, Budhabalanga, Baitarani, Jalaka and other rivers, the sources said.

As many as 184 free kitchens were operating to feed the affected people while adequate fodders were sent to the flood-ravaged areas, they said.

About 90 health teams were deputed to the affected areas with adequate medicines and disinfectants to deal with possible outbreak of water-borne diseases. Steps were also taken to inspect and purify all water sources.

Though air-dropping of food packets and other essential items were carried out for the third day on Saturday, people in some inaccessible areas complained of inadequate supply.

Balasore/ Bhubaneswar ( Orissa) : The Orissa flood claimed five lives so far even as the water levels started receding in many areas on Monday.

"According to the information we have received, at least five people have died due to the floods by Monday," an official of the state revenue control room said.

According to the sources, two people have died in the Balasore and Mayurbhanj districts, while one person died in Bhadrak.

Meanwhile with the fury of swollen rivers on the wane, fear of epidemic loomed large over flood ravaged areas of Orissa, where train services remained severely affected due to damaged tracks.

The flash flood, triggered by five days of heavy rains last week, has affected about 1.2 million people in nearly 900 villages in five districts of Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Bhadrak, Jajpur and Kendrapara.

Fearing an outbreak of an epidemic 50 medical teams equipped with medicines, water purifiers and disinfectants have been sent to different areas of flood-hit areas.

The administration has taken various measures to prevent outbreak of water-borne diseases.

Arrangements have also been to disinfect all water sources with halogen tablets and oral re-hydration pouches being distributed among the deluge-hit people, a district administrative official said.

Traffic was hit on highways and other roads due to breaches caused by gushing water. Similarly many trains were cancelled, diverted and short terminated under the East Coast railway zone due to flooding of the Howrah-Chennai main line, railway sources said.
