35 deaths in 2 weeks, Rohtak village sealed

A spate of deaths in the district?s Titoli village has forced the district administration to seal the village. As per local sources, 35 villagers died in the past two weeks. It is suspected most of the deaths were due to Covid.

Suresh, a resident of Titoli, said: ?Three residents of the village passed away today. Every day, there is news of someone dying. Earlier, villagers were not getting themselves tested for Covid. Now, the Health Department has started testing them and distributing medicines.?

The village had been declared a containment zone, said Rohtak Civil Surgeon Dr Anil Birla. ?The deaths have been caused by several reasons.?

Villagers attribute most of the deaths to some mysterious fever, while the district health authorities maintain that five persons died due to Covid, while other deaths were caused by old age, cancer and liver ailments.

Rohtak village grapples with Covid, ?mystery fever? talk as 18 die in 10 days

WITH AT least 18 deaths in the past 10 days, Titoli village in Rohtak district of Haryana is on the edge. While six of these deaths, confirm health officials, are related to Covid, villagers claim the count is much more. According to them, around 40 people have died of a ?mystery fever? in the past two weeks.

The deaths have prompted the district administration to begin setting up a Covid centre in the village, around 60 km from Delhi, the first such centre in rural Haryana.

?Last week, I prepared a list of 32 persons who died recently. After that, the village has been witnessing an average of two deaths a day due to high temperature,?? says Suresh Kumar, who was speaking on behalf of his sister-in-law Pramila, the village sarpanch. ??People from all age groups have fallen victim to this fever. As many as six persons who died after a bout with fever were below the age of 35.?

Okieman Comment: Sounds like Covid is definitely in the mix. But setting up a containment zone? When much of India is in the middle of a terrible wave of Covid? It is "not what they say, but what they do" that is important in times like these. I will post this in the India Covid thread as well. The local folks definitely think something different than Covid is going on.

Though the articles titles mention Rohtak, I believe it is the village of Titoli that is at the center of this.

Punjab, Haryana to step up screening as COVID spreads it tentacles in villages

            By: PTI |
May 11, 2021 4:03 PMThe spread of coronavirus infection in rural areas of Punjab and Haryana has become a cause for concern, with the authorities deciding to intensify screening and testing in villages.

The spread of coronavirus infection in rural areas of Punjab and Haryana has become a cause for concern, with the authorities deciding to intensify screening and testing in villages. According to a data of the Punjab Health Department, the current case fatality rate in Punjab?s rural areas is 2.7 per cent as against less than one per cent in urban areas. A major spike in COVID-19 cases has been witnessed in the Malwa region, officials said.

On 21 people dying in Rohtak?s Titoli village in April, Vij had recently said only four of these were confirmed to have been died due to COVID. There have been reports of nearly 40 deaths in Mundhal Khurd and Mundhal Kalan villages in Bhiwani in recent weeks, with many passing away within days away after suddenly taking sick. Some opposition leaders claimed inadequate testing in rural areas and many of the deaths being reported recently could be because of COVID.

?We have been hearing of cases where a person was otherwise normal suddenly taken ill, developed COVID-like symptoms and died. However, in the absence of a test, the cause remains unknown,? said a Haryana Congress leader. Former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said the ?infection has reached villages from the big and small towns of the state and the death toll is rising in rural areas. A large number of people have died in villages like Titoli and Mundhal, he said. A task force needs to be created to deal with the problem in rural areas, he said, adding the government should ensure testing, tracing and setting up of temporary hospitals in villages.

The order of things is not temporary hospitals, equipment and food, then testing?
