Mysterious death of birds in Dibrugarh

    By Our Staff Reporter

DIBRUGARH, November 28: Mysterious death of hundreds of birds in Dibrugarh has sent government officials and environmentalists into a tizzy. More than a hundred birds are reported to have died at Maijan in Dibrugarh since yesterday. The dead birds, which include crows, hawks, pigeons and house sparrows, were found in and around the spot where the Dibrugarh Municipal Board (DMB) dump the town?s garbage. A local, Rockybuddin Ahmed, placed the death count at more than 400.

While talking to The Sentinel, he said that over a 100 dead birds have been found near the road that runs past the dump and adjacent places.

?There might be more birds lying dead in the fields and ponds farther away,? he added.

Ahmed said that they noticed birds dying since yesterday afternoon. More dead birds were found today.

The forest department sent a team to look into the matter. They collected samples and sent it to the veterinary department to find the reason behind the phenomenon.

When contacted, Dibrugarh Range Officer Bubul Baruah said that the report submitted by the veterinary department suspect poison to be the cause of death.
