Update on Operation Lady Justice: Task Force Continues Work to Address Missing and Murdered American Indians and Alaska Natives
March 24, 2020
The important work of the Presidential Task Force on Missing and Murdered American Indians and Alaska Natives continues. The task force, designated Operation Lady Justice, will press forward with its mandate to review Indian Country cold cases, strengthen law enforcement protocols, and work with tribes to improve investigations, information sharing and a more seamless response to missing persons investigations.
The task force must also take appropriate precautions to protect the health and safety of its members and all those interfacing with it, following the latest CDC and OMB guidance to protect public health and prevent the further spread of COVID-19. In early March, the task force announced a series of field consultations and listening sessions to occur across the United States. In light of guidance to prevent the further spread of COVID-19, some sessions will have to be rescheduled. In spite of this disruption, the task force is committed to meaningful consultation and dialogue with American Indian and Alaska Native people and leaders as part of this process, and will work to reschedule cancelled sessions as soon as it is safe to do so.
