7 More Aid Workers Killed In Pakistan

    # 6813

On this first day of 2013, more horrendous news out of Pakistan, where last month 9 health care workers involved in a vaccination campaign were murdered (see Pakistan: Fresh Attacks On WHO/UNICEF Polio Workers).
Today, news that a doctor and six aid workers were ambushed and killed by unknown gunmen after leaving a children?s community center.
Although no one has claimed credit for today?s act, aid workers have been repeatedly targeted by religious and political groups in Pakistan for assassination, assault, and kidnapping.
Local Taliban leaders banned Polio immunization campaigns after the use of a sham vaccination campaign as a CIA cover in the pursuit of Osama Bin Laden (see Maryn McKenna?s Update: Pakistan, Polio, Fake Vaccines And The CIA).
Details are still emerging on today?s attack. So far, the reporting on today?s incident has come from Reuters.

Seven charity workers shot dead in Pakistan: police

Pakistani hospital workers transfer a victim of a drive-by shooting at a hospital in Quetta on August 27, 2012.

Six women and a man working for a health and education charity in northwest Pakistan were killed in a drive-by shooting on Tuesday, police said.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan : Six women and a man working for a health and education charity in northwest Pakistan were killed in a drive-by shooting on Tuesday, police said.

Police said they were investigating the motive for the attack. Charity workers have been the target in the past of attacks blamed on Islamist militants and other gunmen.

The victims ? all Pakistanis ? worked for a Pakistani charity which runs health and education projects, said Abdul Rashid Khan, police chief for Swabi district where the killings took place.

They were on their way home from a local community centre when they were attacked.

?Four men came on two motorbikes. They attacked their van, a Toyota HiAce. They opened fire to the right and left of the van and fled on their motorbikes,? Khan said.

?Six women and a man have died. The driver is injured
    ,? he said.

They were shot near a junction for the motorway which connects the northwestern city of Peshawar to the capital Islamabad and the eastern city of Lahore.

Rooh ul-Amin, who heads an umbrella organisation of charities in Swabi, said the victims worked for Ujalla, which was formerly known as the Swabi Women Welfare Society and which ran classes on health education and employed health visitors.

He said his initial information was that five women teachers, one woman health worker and a male health technician were killed.

Police also identified five women teachers among the dead, saying they worked for a local charity that promotes health and education at a community centre in a Swabi village.

Last month, nine polio vaccination workers were shot dead in a string of attacks in Karachi and northwest Pakistan.http://www.nation.com.pk/events-gall...-fresh-attacks

The killings prompted the UN children?s agency and the World Health Organisation to suspend work on polio campaigns in the country.

Also last month a Swedish charity worker was critically injured after a gun attack in the eastern city of Lahore where she worked for the US-founded Full Gospel Assemblies.

The organisation runs charities including a technical training institute, adult literacy centre and orphanage. Police said the Swedish woman had lived in Pakistan for 38 years.

In August 2011, US development worker Warren Weinstein was kidnapped after gunmen tricked their way into his Lahore home. Pakistani officials believe he is being held by ******** and Taliban extremists in Pakistan?s lawless northwest.

In April 2012 a British Muslim Red Cross worker was beheaded nearly four months after being kidnapped in the southwestern city of Quetta.http://pakistan.onepakistan.com.pk/n...an-police.html

Re: 7 More Aid Workers Killed In Pakistan - Pakistan, Polio, Fake Vaccines And The CIA

Gunmen on motorcycles sprayed a van carrying employees from a community center with bullets Tuesday, killing five female teachers and two aid workers, but sparing a child they took out of the vehicle before opening fire.

The director of the group that the seven worked for says he suspects it may have been the latest in a series of attacks targeting anti-polio efforts in Pakistan. Some militants oppose the vaccination campaigns, accusing health workers of acting as spies for the U.S. and alleging the vaccine is intended to make Muslim children sterile...

...The injured driver in Swabi told investigators that the gunmen stopped the vehicle and removed a boy ? the son of one of the women ? before indiscriminately opening fire, said police officer Fazal Malik. The woman's husband rushed to the scene after receiving a phone call alerting him to the shooting.

"I left everything and rushed towards the spot. As I reached there I saw their dead bodies were inside the vehicle and he (his son) was sitting with someone," said Zain ul Hadi.

Swabi police chief Abdur Rasheed said most of the women killed were between the ages of 20 and 22. He said four gunmen on two motorcycles fled the scene and have not been apprehended...http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/0...n_2392388.html
