  • MSNBC Misinformation of Swine Flu Origin

I just heard John Meacham (sp?) of Newsweek on MSNBC state that the swine flu involved many different strains, and Laurie Garret from Council on Foreign Relation is breaking the story that humans infected swine in 2005 (in Canada?).

This is utter nonsense. There is only one strain infecting humans in 2009 and that strain has one human flu gene (PB1) that has been in swine since 1993.

I suspect that these reports will spark a major outbreak of misinformation.

Can you please clarify this? Do you mean that every single SF isolate submitted for testing from around the world is genetically identical? Perhaps there are a lot of people who are confused, assuming that, as with bacteria, small genetic differences are found in different strains of the same pathogen.

Sequences from isolates in Mexico, California, Texas, Kansas, Ohio, New York, Toronto, Netherlands, German, New Zealand are virtually identical (well over 99%), based on published sequences.
