      Re: new flu gene found

this could give another guideline how to easily manipulate an existing
successful virus so it becomes more virulent.
Indeed, they had done this with the 1918 virus in mice.

Should such "tricks" how to increase virulence of viruses be published ?
Ask NSABB. Apparently this wasn't done, else we'd heard about it.

Ribosomal frameshifting used in influenza A virus expression occurs within the
sequence UCC_UUU_CGU and is in the +1 direction

        TCCTTTCGT
In analyses of codon usage in PA, it was observed that the motif TCC_TTT_CGT is extremely
highly conserved at the 5′ end

mutating the UCC codon to AGC (serine) or to GGG, CCC or AAA resulted in a 40 to 70 per cent
reduction in the frameshifting efficiency [30].

TCCTTTCGT found in genbank release 194.0 : (flu-A only)

          14th influenza A polypeptide:
          (segment 7)

Segment 7 of influenza A virus produces up to four mRNAs. Unspliced transcripts encode M1, spliced mRNA2 encodes the M2 ion channel, while protein products from spliced mRNAs 3 and 4 have not previously been identified. The M2 protein plays important roles in virus entry and assembly, and is a targe …
