  • Nigerian Sequence is at GenBank - Niman reports

Italy has place the HA sequence from H5N1 from a Nigerian chicken on deposit at GenBank

    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/...de&val=88604738

    A/chicken/Nigeria/641/2006(H5N1)

The Nigeria HA sequence looks most like the Kurgan (Russia, near Kazakhstan) sequence. Definiely has a northern flavor.

H5N1 got from Kurgan to Nigeria via migratory birds.

The H5N1 is in the East Atlantic Flyway. More H5N1 is coming to western Europe and North America.

The H5N1 in birds migrating to Europe from Nigeria has H5N1 from a chicken with S227 (not the S227K present in some of the Turkish H5N1s that caused deaths in humans).

The recombination of H5N1 with H1N1 in pigs uses sequences downstream from position 227 so they are the same regadless of the presence or absence of S227N. In fact without S227N the sequence would look MORE like H3 (which has S at positions 227 and 228).
