Re: ebola case counts in computer readable form

          Forbes - charts :
The number of deaths in West Africa continues to rise at an exponential rate. These charts help explain the latest trends.

they only show the total, cumulative number of cases, I think showing the weekly
new cases instead would be more informative.

          still saying:
          > The total number of cases is rising at an exponential rate. As of 14 September,
          > the doubling time is 16 days in Guinea, 24 days in Liberia and 30 days in Sierra Leone [1].
          ...
          > References: 1. WHO Ebola Response Team (2014) Ebola Virus Disease in West Africa ?
          > The First 9 Months of the Epidemic and Forward Projections. The New England Journal of Medicine

but that article is from Sep.23 and only uses data upto Sep.14.
At that time it looked indeed exponential. But it stopped doing so since mid-Sep.
Yet I still see that "exponential" - classification everywhere, it had not been corrected
or updated. The original authors and all the newspapers and magazines who printed it
kept silent on that important issue. I think we have a problem here in how our system
with publishing works. You get money for the first headlines but not for the update
          and corrections are even bad.
The other issue is maybe, that the "exponential" figures are being used to raise more
money for countermeasures. This may be a good thing, but you are losing credibility
          by being dishonest like that.

you can see 5 (or even 6 when the Liberian numbers in the last few weeks
are genuine) periods in the Forbes chart.

          March 20 - April 10 : linear
          April 10 - May 20 : linear (contant)
          May 20 - July 20 : linear
          July 20 - Sept.10 : exponential
          Sept.10 - Oct.12 : linear

In the first period the growth was almost linear

Re: ebola case counts in computer readable form

What you are demonstrating is that the published case counts do not support the claims of exponential growth?

I think no one knows the real case counts. I think the claims of exponential growth are based on the fact that the the patient numbers are growing too fast to treat.

Re: ebola case counts in computer readable form

                  only published data, of course.
There is good evidence, that the published case-counts,
the weekly differences, are a good representation of the
development. The sum of their "suspected","probable" and
"confirmed" cases seems to be the best measure.

"Exponential" is a mathematical term and depends on the numbers
only, not the treatment or hospital beds or such.
It was valid when the papers were written but is no longer valid
                  with the actual data.
                  They should correct it.
The 1.4 million horror-figure stands still in the newspapers and articles.
Ban Ki Moon just recently repeated that it's exponential.

                  -----------edit------------
                  and now I read:
                  > Dr. Chan declined to expand on those figures because they were still rising “exponentially.”

Re: ebola case counts in computer readable form

from page 3 in the pdf:

                    Bruce Aylward:
A couple of other trends that are interesting that you may see in the data as you look at it and
we get it out to you. One is if we look at the reported number of cases over the last four
weeks and we take seven day blocks for which we have full data it's been running about
1,000 cases a week now for about three to four weeks. A couple of people have looked at that
and said, well, what's going on? Is the epidemic slowing down or are we not seeing the
exponential growth? And quite frankly, it's too early to say because, as most of you know, the
numbers go up and down. The labs sometimes can't keep up with the amount of specimens
they're getting. When you start getting up in the thousands of cases like they are now,
sometimes countries end up with a big stack of reports that they're going to have to sit down
over a weekend and get a bunch of people to enter into the computer. So, really too early to
say because there's a lot of data issues around them.

[we would see this in the daily reports then. And it would be concentrated in one
administrative region, they are all given separately on an almost daily basis.
We don't see that exponential growth in _any_ of the regions. ]

But there's a couple of positive things we're seeing that, again, I think some of you have seen
and one is a slowing down of the rate of new cases. In some areas in what's been the historic
epicentre, Lofa County, Liberia, in both Kanama and Kolahun it's been slowing down over
the last couple of weeks, as well. Now, as some of you also know though, in Gu?ck?dou right
across the border, we've seen the disease go up and down, as well. But when we look ? and I
have to be careful because I've not been into either of those areas myself ? but as we talk to
our teams on the ground there and teams from other organisations? I've learned you talk to
your own teams but you really learn when you talk to team working for other people
sometimes, so we speak to both. There's a lot of information that suggests that this is the
result of real change in the behaviour or the approach of communities, most often.

[we saw some examples where it went down after it had gone up a lot.
That could be due to some "awakening call" to change behaviour and countermeasures]

                    ----------------------------------------------------------------

                    page 7:
but we anticipate the number of cases occurring per week by that time is going to be
somewhere between 5,000-10,000 a week; it could be higher, could be lower but it's going to
                    be somewhere in that ballpark.

                    page 10:
we will be making those things public. [available beds]

                    page 12:
It would be horrifically unethical to suggest ? I can't even go there, frankly ?
to say that you're simply going to isolate people.

in Guinea it looks like let's take 1.5 the current number of cases,
in Sierra Leone let's take twofold the number of cases reports
and then for Liberia let's take 2.5.

Just to clarify this number, 5,000-10,000 cases. So, you expect the number of cases to peak
in the week of 1st December and then it would go down. Is this correct?
                    BA That's the goal.

About every 30 days you see a doubling in the number of cases

                    page 17
in Monrovia that the reported safe burial rate is quite high

                    page 18:
Next time I come I'll bring a couple of graphs because I had some nice graphs.

[I do consider that "10000 weekly on Dec.1" as pretty unlikely
my guess would be ~500, half of what we have now, because
the measures are already being increased]

                        Shaman's update for Oct.15 :

from his chart, combined, no change, I read ~: 9100,10300,11900,14000,16900,20800,25831
                        for weeks 41,...,47(Nov.23)
[doesn't work in my old browser, but works e.g. in updated firefox]

                        exponential approximation of this is
                        a(i)=5538+2665*exp(.29*i) , i=1,2,3,4,5,7
                        (giving 9100,10298,11899,14039,16899,20721,25830, 32656,41779,53972,...)

with an estimated 9123 new cases for the first December-week

                        > Total cases and deaths were used to train these model forecasts.

he doesn't say, how he "trained" it and especially, what data he used for training.
Apparently the training was finished some weeks ago, and new training with
the new data doesn't take place.

                        > more aggressive growth in Guinea over the coming weeks [--> "no change" ??] , 6080
                        > In Liberia, ~(improved*2+no_change)/3 , underreporting-bias ? , 5647
                        > In Sierra Leone, no change , 9982

[is that what Shaman really thinks or what they want him to write ?]

my estimate of his prediction of cases for the first Decemberweek:
                        Guinea:3931,Liberia:809,Sierra Leone:3101

Re: ebola case counts in computer readable form

Caitlin Rivers has digitalized the daily situation reports from
Liberia and Sierra Leone (as far as they are available)
60 reports from each country with ~30 indicators for ~15 regions

I converted the Liberia-data into one easily computer-readable file
of 68009 bytes with just the 59*31*16 numbers, which I can upload
if someone manages to figure out whether that is allowed.

as data from Liberia becomes harder to get, I included
                            the reported contacts:
Maybe this is currently better than listing cases
                            (suspected,probable,confirmed) which becomes less clear
                            in the recent reports

Liberia, daily new reported ebola contacts
(to be checked for 21 days)

the population rich urban areas Montserrado in Liberia and Western Area in
Sierra Leone were the worst last week.

The other areas didn't look so bad
Margibi is way down since 2 weeks
Bombali and Port Loko could be post-peak
