  • Discovered a molecule able to recognize the multiple variants of the Influenza disease and therefore 'direct' the immune response

A group of researchers from the Institute of Research in Biomedicine (IRB, affiliated with USI) have discovered and identified a molecule capable of recognizing the multiple variants of influenza and consequently 'directing' the immune response in individuals suffering from the disease. The research results, which pave the way for the design of alternative therapies to vaccination, have been published in the scientific journal Nature Microbiology. Influenza is one of the most common diseases responsible for multiple hospitalizations worldwide, especially in elderly people with compromised immune systems. However, despite the development of effective vaccines, the virus is able to mutate and escape the body's defenses, and to protect itself, an annual reformulation of the vaccine is therefore necessary. So far, scientific research has focused on studying alternative ways to completely neutralize the virus to avoid annual revaccination.
