    ANKARA

Turkey’s Health Minister Fahrettin Koca confirmed Wednesday that there are no signs of the deadly novel coronavirus in passengers who arrived from Iran.

Some 132 Turkish citizens arrived in the capital Ankara on Tuesday after they were evacuated from Iran, where 15 deaths from the coronavirus have been confirmed.

Koca stressed that the decision to quarantine them was taken in line with recommendations from the Health Ministry’s scientific committee in terms of not taking risks because four of the passengers had cold symptoms and others had visited the city of Qom, the epicenter of the virus in Iran.

"With 132 passengers and 10 crew members, I want to say that we do not have any passengers with a fever above 38 degrees,” he told reporters.

"In general, I would like to point out that they are in good condition and that there are no respiratory or similar problems in this sense.”

Koca stated that tests for the detection of 24 different viruses have been conducted on the passengers with cold symptoms and that they have been followed up on.

He said samples from two-thirds of the passengers were taken and the rest were being monitored.

"After our first two cases, we confirmed three new cases who came into contact with them and were from the same family. All five cases are directly related," said Fahrettin Koca in a news conference in the capital Ankara.

Two of the patients have difficulty in breathing, Koca added.

Turkey banned flights to 14 countries as part of measures to stem the coronavirus outbreak, he said.

The official also reminded that Turkish citizens who visit foreign countries will have to take 14 days off from work and spend the time in self-isolation as of Monday.

Turkish Presidential Communications Director Fahrettin Altun dismissed on Tuesday reports of a nationwide lockdown and state of emergency after the country’s coronavirus cases rose to 47 on Monday.

“Such comprehensive restrictive steps are not on our agenda,” Altun told state-run Anadolu Agency.

The measures taken against coronavirus continue in “a very transparent, determined and rational manner," he said.

Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said late on Monday 29 new coronavirus cases had been confirmed in Turkey.

Twenty-six of the latest cases are related to Turks returning from the United States, the Middle East and Europe, while three cases returned from Umrah pilgrimages to the Muslim holy cities of Mecca and Medina, Koca said.

The expected return of 21,000 Turkish nationals from the pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia over the next few days has sparked fears that there could be a large leap in the number of cases. Some 10,300 Turkish nationals returning from the Kingdom were placed under a 14-day quarantine in university dormitories in Ankara and the central province of Konya in order to contain the spread...
