Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic on Thursday criticised the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network, BIRN, over its recent investigation into the number of COVID-19 victims in Serbia, saying the report, published on June 22, used data that was not authentic.

The report said the state COVID-19 database showed that more than twice as many infected patients had died than the authorities announced and that hundreds more people had tested positive for the virus in recent days than was admitted.

But in an interview for Radio Television of Serbia, RTS, on Thursday, Vucic said he was “completely sure that they [the data BIRN published] are not authentic”.

Questioned about the BIRN report, some members of the state Crisis Staff did not deny the information contained in it but said they had not seen the database and tried to blame the difference in numbers on methodology.

A team of 15 doctors and other medical personnel from Tuzla and Sarajevo in Bosnia left for the town of Novi Pazar in southwest Serbia on Friday to help colleagues deal with a fresh outbreak of the coronavirus, which has claimed dozens of lives in the mainly Bosniak region of Sandzak in the last few weeks.

As the team was on its way to Serbia, Novi Pazar hospital coordinator Mirsad Đerlek told the media that 10 people had died overnight – all of them over 75 years of age – and that 290 remained in hospital after 80 were released as recovered. On Thursday, officials reported 266 new cases in Serbia and 11 deaths, with 3,339 active cases and 120 people on respirators.
        ...
“The situation in Sandzak is alarming and we have decided to help colleagues in Novi Pazar because our initial experience in dealing with the coronavirus in all medical branches has proved very good,” Rifatbegovic was quoted as saying before his team set off.
        ...

In the meantime, the Serbian government has increased its own medical help for Sandzak and a military field hospital has been set up in Novi Pazar.

Director of the Clinical Centre of Serbia (KCS) Milika Asanin stated today that the epidemiological situation in Belgrade is markedly better and that the number of medical check-ups at triage COVID centres has dropped in relation to previous weeks and therefore the number of admissions to COVID hospitals too.

Speaking at a press conference of the COVID-19 Crisis Response Team, Asanin said that there were 300 check-ups in all COVID centres in Belgrade, which is less than before and added that one-third of patients still require hospital admission.

Director of the KCS Centre for Anaesthesia and Resuscitation Nebojsa Ladjevic pointed out that despite a drop in the number of check-ups in COVID centres and hospitals, there is still a large number of patients at intensive care units.
