Flu kills 12 in Wales this winter
    Jan 6 2011 WalesOnline

TWELVE people have died after contracting flu in Wales, the Assembly Government tonight said.

And flu has played a contributing factor in a further 45 deaths since October, figures have revealed.

The figures ? the first to be issued by the Assembly Government since the end of the swine flu pandemic ? come as doctors in Wales have been given permission to use the 2009 swine flu jab to vaccinate patients.

It follows shortages of the seasonal flu vaccine in parts of Wales, including the nation?s largest hospital ? University Hospital of Wales, in Cardiff.

The figures also show there are 71 people with flu being treated in critical care beds in Wales ? 21 of these patients are aged between six and 15...

    Weekly Influenza Surveillance Report
    Wednesday 5 January 2011 (covering week 52 2010)

    Key points – Wales
 The provisional consultation rate for influenza in Wales in week 52 (week
ending 02/01/2011) reported through the GP Sentinel Surveillance of Infections Scheme is 89.2 consultations per 100,000 population which is close to the threshold for higher than average seasonal activity. This represents a slight decrease in the number of consultations, from 92.1 per 100,000 in week 51.
Week 52 includes the 27th December and 28th December Christmas Bank
Holidays and reduced GP opening hours may have affected the clinical
    consultation rate.
Surveillance data from Out of Hours doctors and NHS Direct collected during week 52 suggests that influenza activity in the communitymay still be increasing. Provisional consultation rates were highest in the 25-34 year age-group (129.2 per 100,000).
 Use of oseltamivir and zanamivir for treatment and prophylaxis of influenza isnow indicated, in line with NICE guidance.
 To date 14 samples from sentinel GPs, collected during week 52, were submitted for virological testing. Five samples tested positive for influenza A, four of which were influenza A(H1N1) 2009 (three patients from Mid & West Wales, two aged 35-44y and the other aged 25-34y, and a patient from SE Wales aged 45-64y) and an influenza A untyped (a patient from Mid & West Wales aged 45-64y). Four samples tested positive for influenza B (three patients from Mid & West Wales, two aged 65+y and one aged 35-44y, and a patient from SE Wales aged 25-34y). The remaining five samples all testing negative for influenza and RSV.
 During week 52 there were 26,428 consultations with Out of Hours doctors in Wales reported to Public Health Wales, of which 32.7% were respiratory related (see Figure4). This represents a substantial increase in both total Out of Hours consultations and respiratory related consultations from the previous week.
 As at 05/01/2011, based on data from 73% of Welsh practices the uptake of seasonal influenza vaccine in patients aged 65 years and over was 60.2%, ranging by Health Board from 45.6% to 64.2%. In at risk patients aged under 65 years the uptake rate was 41.9%, ranging by Health Board from 30.9% to 46.2% (see Table 2).
National uptake of influenza immunisation in pregnant women, not in any other
    clinical risk group, was 18.4%.

      Weekly Influenza Surveillance Report
      Wednesday 12 January 2011 (covering week 01 2011)

      Key points – Wales
 The consultation rate for influenza in Wales in week 01 (week ending
09/01/2011) reported through the GP Sentinel Surveillance of Infections
Scheme is 93 consultations per 100,000 population, which is close to the
threshold for higher than average seasonal activity. This represents a slight
increase in the number of consultations, from 85 per 100,000 in week 52. Week 01 includes the New Years Day Bank Holiday and reduced GP opening hours may have affected the clinical consultation rate.
Surveillance data from Out of Hours doctors and NHS Direct suggest that although influenza activity is still high, the number of influenza related consultations taking place with Out of Hours doctors and influenza related calls to NHS Direct Wales have decreased during week 01. Provisional consultation rates were highest in the 25-34 year age-group (147 per 100,000).
Use of oseltamivir and zanamivir for treatment and prophylaxis of influenza is now indicated, in line with NICE guidance.
 To date 22 samples from sentinel GPs, collected during week 01, were submitted for virological testing. In total, samples from nine patients tested positive for influenza A(H1N1) 2009, (one patient from N Wales aged 5-14y, three from patients in M&W Wales aged 15-24y, 25-34y and 45-64y and four patients from SE Wales, median age 47y) one of these samples also tested positive for influenza B (patient aged 15-
24y from SE Wales). Samples from six patients tested positive for influenza B (one patient from N Wales aged 25-34y, one patient from M&W Wales aged 25-34y and three patients from SE Wales aged 1-4y, 15-24y and 45-64y). One sample tested positive for RSV (SE Wales patient aged 35-44y), the remaining seven samples all tested negative for influenza and RSV.
 During week 01 there were 18,362 consultations with Out of Hours doctors in Wales reported to Public Health Wales, of which 26% were respiratory related (see Figure 4). This represents a decrease in both total Out of Hours consultations and respiratory related consultations from the previous week.
 As at 10/01/2011, based on data from 89% of Welsh practices the uptake of seasonal influenza vaccine in patients aged 65 years and over was 61.2%, ranging by Health Board from 49.2% to 64.3%. In at risk patients aged under 65 years the uptake rate was 43.7%, ranging by Health Board from 34.1% to 46.9% (see Table 2).
National uptake of influenza immunisation in pregnant women, not in any other

Latest figures on flu death due
        (UKPA) – 1 hour ago

Latest figures on the number of flu deaths are to be published as the mother of a three-year-old victim urged the Government to further review its vaccination policy.

Pharmacy giant Boots has also revealed its stores have "very limited" stocks of the winter flu jab and said there was currently no hope of replenishing its supplies.

The number of flu deaths this winter stands at 50 - with 45 due to swine flu - but the Health Protection Agency is set to release updated statistics.

The Department of Health will also publish figures on the number of people suffering from flu.

Gemma Ameen and her husband, Zana, switched off life support to their daughter, Lana, just two days after she apparently caught a cold on Christmas Eve.

The couple, a nurse and a doctor, initially took their daughter to hospital in Stockport, Greater Manchester, where she was diagnosed with an infection and sent home. Later the same day she was taken back to Stepping Hill Hospital after she suffered multiple fits.

        snip

Mrs Ameen issued a photograph of her daughter in intensive care in a bid to reverse Government policy on who is eligible for the seasonal flu vaccine which combats the H1N1 virus.

The Department of Health insisted independent expert advice was "absolutely clear" that children who do not have risk factors should not be vaccinated. The advice had been reviewed recently and the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) did not change its recommendation, it added.

'Worst of flu is over' as rates fall sharply
            By Madeleine Brindley, WalesOnline
            Jan 19 2011

FLU is on the wane in Wales as the number of people falling ill has dropped sharply.

The flu consultation rate has almost halved in the space of a week but experts have warned Welsh hospitals will continue to be under pressure for another fortnight.

Figures published by Public Health Wales today show the flu GP consultation rate stands at 51.5 per 100,000, down from 93.

Flu death toll rises to 28 in Wales
              Madeleine Brindley, Health Wales
              Jan 20 2011
THE number of people who died after contracting flu this winter in Wales has risen to 28.

The official flu-related death toll is now the same as that during the 2009 swine flu pandemic.

The rise in the number of deaths - an increase of one from last week - comes after a report yesterday by Public Health Wales which showed the number of cases of flu had fallen dramatically in the last week.

                Weekly Influenza Surveillance Report
                Wednesday 26 January 2011 (covering week 03 2011)

                Key points ? Wales
 The consultation rate for influenza in Wales in week 03 (week ending
23/01/2011) reported through the GP Sentinel Surveillance of Infections
Scheme is 27 consultations per 100,000 population. This is a decrease in
consultations from 51 per 100,000 in week 02 but is still above the baseline threshold for normal seasonal activity. Provisional consultation rates were highest in the 01-04 year age-group (55 per 100,000).
 Use of oseltamivir and zanamivir for treatment and prophylaxis of influenza is currently indicated, in line with NICE guidance.
To date eight virological surveillance samples from sentinel GPs, collected during week 03, were submitted and tested. Samples from three patients tested positive for influenza B (one from MW Wales, patient aged 45-64y and two patients from SE Wales, one aged 25-44y and one of unknown age). One sample tested positive for RSV (patient from N Wales aged 1-4y), the remaining four samples all tested negative for influenza and RSV.
 During week 03 the number of consultations with Out of Hours doctors in Wales reported to Public Health Wales remained stable (12,047 compared to 12,066 in week 02, see Figure 4). The proportion of respiratory related consultations with Out of Hours doctors also remained stable (19% compared to 20% in week 02).
 As at 25/01/2011, based on data from 90% of Welsh practices the uptake of seasonal influenza vaccine in patients aged 65 years and over was 63.8%, ranging by Health Board from 58.2% to 67.0%. In at risk patients aged under 65 years the uptake rate was 46.9%, ranging by Health Board from 41.8% to 50.7% (see Table 2).
National uptake of influenza immunisation in pregnant women, not in any other
clinical risk group, increased to 36.8% compared to 34.4% reported for week 02.

                  Madeleine Brindley, WalesOnline
                  Jan 27 2011
THE number of people who have died after contracting flu in Wales has risen to 34.

The seasonal flu death toll has now passed the 28 deaths which were linked to swine flu during the 2009 pandemic.

The increase in the number of deaths, revealed in official Assembly Government figures tonight, comes as cases of flu are falling and it appears the winter flu season is coming to an end.

Figures published by Public Health Wales on Wednesday show the flu consultation rate had fallen to 27 per 100,000.

                    Wednesday 2 February 2011 (covering week 04 2011)

                    Key points – Wales
The consultation rate for influenza in Wales in week 04 (week ending 30/01/2011) reported through the GP Sentinel Surveillance of Infections Scheme is 24.7 consultations per 100,000 population, this is at the baseline threshold for normal seasonal activity and represents a slight decrease in the consultation rate from week 03 (25.5 per 100,000). Taken into account with other indicators of influenza this suggests that activity is returning to baseline levels. Provisional consultation rates were highest in the 01-04 year age-group (48.2 per 100,000). Use of oseltamivir and zanamivir for treatment and prophylaxis of influenza is currently indicated, in line with NICE guidance.
To date seven virological surveillance samples from sentinel GPs, collected during week 04, were submitted and tested. Samples from one patient tested positive for influenza A(H1N1) (a patient from SE Wales aged 35-44y), the remaining six samples all tested negative for influenza and RSV.
During week 04 the number of consultations with Out of Hours doctors in Wales reported to Public Health Wales decreased slightly (11,547 compared to 12,047 in week 03, see Figure 4). The proportion of respiratory related consultations with Out of Hours doctors increased slightly (21% compared to 19% in week 03). As at 02/02/2011, based on data from 90% of Welsh practices the uptake of seasonal influenza vaccine in patients aged 65 years and over was 64.2%, ranging by Health Board from 58.2% to 67.7%. In at risk patients aged under 65 years the uptake rate was 47.4%, ranging by Health Board from 42.2% to 51.6% (see Table 2). National uptake of influenza immunisation in pregnant women, not in any other clinical risk group, was 37.6%.

The consultation rate for influenza in Wales in week 05 (week ending 06/02/2011) reported through the GP Sentinel Surveillance of Infections Scheme is 13.2 consultations per 100,000 population, this is now well below the baseline threshold for normal seasonal activity and represents a decrease in the consultation rate from week 04 (23.5 per 100,000). Provisional consultation rates were highest in the <1 year age-group (37.7 per 100,000, although due to the small denominator of the <1 age-group this represents just one case.) and the 25-34 year age-group (24.7 per 100,000). Use of oseltamivir and zanamivir for treatment and prophylaxis of influenza is currently indicated, in line with NICE guidance.
To date two virological surveillance samples from sentinel GPs, collected during week 05, were submitted and tested, both samples testing negative for influenza, RSV, rhinovirus, adenovirus and parainfluenza.

Welsh sentinel practices (as of 23/02/11)
*Reporting through Audit+ commenced during 2010 week 40.
                        Key points:

                        Wales
Week 07 clinical consultation rate for influenza, reported through the GP Sentinel Surveillance of Infections Scheme is 6.2 consultations per 100,000 practice population.
This has decreased compared to the rate reported for week 06 of 7.8 per 100,000 practice population.
Influenza activity is now well below the threshold for normal seasonal activity and the consultation rate, along with other indicators, suggests that influenza activity in Wales is continuing to decrease.
The highest provisional age specific consultation rate this week was in the 15-24 year age group (10.8 per 100,000).
Use of oseltamivir and zanamivir for treatment and prophylaxis of influenza is currently indicated, in line with NICE guidance.
