    A CARE home resident has died and 20 more are ill in another outbreak of a flu-like illness.

    The latest outbreak has affected an unnamed residential home in Carmarthenshire and follows two deaths at two nursing homes in Swansea.

    One dead in Carmarthenshire nursing home flu-like illness
    Twenty-one of the 35 residents at the unidentified home in Carmarthenshire have been ill


    Health chiefs are investigating an outbreak of a flu-like illness following the death of a resident at a nursing home in Carmarthenshire.

    Public Health Wales (PHW) said 21 of the 35 residents at the unidentified home had been ill since 10 April.

    It is unclear if the flu-like illness caused the death.

    Earlier this week, it was revealed that two people had died after a flu outbreak at two Swansea nursing homes.

    Public health officials said five residents had been hospitalised and the remainder had been offered the anti-viral drug, Tamiflu.

    Carmarthenshire council, which runs the home, said it was working very closely with PHW.

    Dr Mac Walapu, consultant in communicable disease control for PHW, said: "In view of the rapid spread and high attack rate of this illness, it is most likely to be influenza...

      Fairly high attack rate at about 58% (21/35), although high attacks rates can be expected in confined locations such as nursing homes. Based on the numbers in this thread (35) from Carmarthenshire and the thread for the two deaths in Swansea (link) with 17 individuals testing positive, the CFR for this grouping of influenza infections appears to be about .05, not outside the expected range for elderly individuals and such a small sample.
