Swine Flu: announcement on critically ill man due

Health chiefs will confirm on Wednesday whether a critically ill man is a victim of swine flu.

A 37-year-old man being cared for in a Glasgow hospital has been described as a "highly probable" case.

The patient was admitted to intensive care last week with a chest infection and tests suggest he may have the virus.

Scottish Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon said on Tuesday it was not yet known whether flu was a contributing factor to his deterioration or simply coincidental.

The total number of cases confirmed in the UK currently stands at 184.

More than 40 Birmingham schoolchildren recently confirmed as having swine flu were said to be responding well to treatment.

The 37-year-old, admitted to Glasgow's Victoria Infirmary last Thursday, is not known to have had any contact with any swine flu cases or travelled recently.

Staff and patients who have been in contact with him will be given the appropriate advice and treatment, Ms Sturgeon said.

The man is being treated in isolation and no other patients in the hospital were showing symptoms last night.

So far 170 cases of the H1N1 virus have been confirmed in England, with 13 in Scotland and one in Northern Ireland.

Of the new swine flu cases, 44 are linked to Welford Primary in Handsworth, which is currently closed for the half-term holidays.

Almost 50 countries have confirmed cases of swine flu and about 13,000 people around the world have been diagnosed with the virus.

The death toll in Mexico stands at 83, while 12 people have died in the United States and two have died in Canada.

Glasgow patient with underlying health problems giving cause for serious concern, says Scottish health secretary

A 37-year-old Scotsman is critically ill in hospital today with a "highly probable" case of swine flu.

The Glasgow man, who is being cared for in isolation in the intensive care unit at the city's Victoria Infirmary, was giving cause for "serious clinical concern", the Scottish health secretary, Nicola Sturgeon, said last night.

The married father of three was admitted last week with a severe chest infection and was routinely checked for a range of viruses. Test results should show today whether he is a confirmed case.

Sturgeon said the patient had significant underlying health problems and it was unclear what had led to the decline in his condition.

"At this time public health staff in Greater Glasgow and Clyde are not able to say if flu is the underlying cause of his deterioration, or if it is simply an incidental finding to his other health problems," she said.

There was no evidence the patient had contact with any known or suspected case of swine flu, and he had not recently travelled overseas, Sturgeon said. No other patients in the hospital were showing symptoms.

Scotland's chief medical officer, Dr Harry Burns, said the patient had a number of health problems. "This may just be coincidental to a condition that may be suppressing his immunity," he said.

Dr Linda de Caestecker, the director of public health at Glasgow NHS, said all staff who had been in close contact with the patient would be offered Tamiflu.

"Public health specialists are also investigating and contacting other close contacts and all appropriate infection control and public health measures are in place," she said.

The UK tally of confirmed swine flu cases rose by 47 yesterday to 184, largely due to an outbreak at a Birmingham school. Pupils began feeling ill last week and laboratory results confirmed the virus in 41 children and three adults linked to Welford primary school.

The school, which recently featured in a BBC2 documentary called The Primary, is undergoing a "deep clean" during the half-term holiday.

Swine flu has been confirmed in almost 50 countries, and about 13,000 people worldwide have been diagnosed with the virus. The death toll in Mexico stands at 83, while 12 people have died in the US and two in Canada.

One of the four cases confirmed in the UK on Monday was yesterday revealed to be a two-year-old boy from Oxford.

A Department of Health spokesman said cases of swine flu in the UK had so far been mild and there was no evidence of widespread community transmission.

"Our strategy of containing the spread with antivirals appears to have been effective in reducing symptoms and preventing further spread of infection.

"But we must not be complacent. It is right to prepare for the possibility of a global pandemic. The UK's arrangements are continuing, to ensure that we are well placed to deal with this new infection."

A 37-year-old Glasgow man who is critically ill in intensive care at Victoria Infirmary has been confirmed as Scotland's 14th case of swine flu.

He was admitted to A&E there last Thursday suffering from a chest infection and other respiratory problems. The unidentified man has a history of chronic health issues.

Routine tests were carried out and on Tuesday they resulted in his being listed as having a "highly probable" case of the H1N1 strain of the virus. On Wednesday, the Scottish Government confirmed the man has swine flu.

The government also confirmed that five of Scotland's ten possible cases currently under investigation are members of the Glasgow man's family.

Health staff were not able to say whether the deterioration in his condition is due to the flu, or his other health problems. They said, however, that other people who have died from H1N1 have tended to have had other serious medical conditions as well.

There was no evidence he had contact with any known or suspected case of swine flu, and had no history of recent travel.

He has a "fairly extensive" contact group, health officials said. Risk assessments are going on to determine who are his closest contacts.

The man is said to have an extended family group including children. He has been visited in hospital by family members, and hospital staff have had close contact with him as well. They are being given appropriate advice and treatment.

On Wednesday night, a government spokesperson said the man's three children attend Shawlands Academy and Annette Street Primary in Glasgow.

The spokesperson added: "A full risk assessment has been carried out and, as the children were not at school while unwell, the schools will remain open. However, this situation will be kept under review and parents will be given all appropriate advice. Public health staff will be on hand at both schools in the morning to offer advice to parents."

Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon said: "Clearly, this is a very unfortunate set of circumstances for this individual and my thoughts and wishes are with him and his family at what must be a very difficult time for them.

"It should be noted, however, that this individual has some very significant underlying health problems and it is not yet clear to what extent his infection

with the H1N1 virus may have been a contributory factor to his condition or whether it is incidental.

"Without at all wanting to diminish the gravity of this development for this particular family, the threat to the general population in Scotland remains low. Most people have had only a mild reaction to the virus and our efforts to contain its spread have so far proved successful.

"Of course, we cannot be complacent, especially since the virus continues to spread worldwide and there is also the risk that the virus might mutate and become more virulent during the autumn and winter months."
