Two swine flu cases confirmed in Scotland
Press Association
Monday, 27 April 2009
Two patients in a Scotland who returned last week from a visit to Mexico were today confirmed as suffering from swine flu.
The news came after Britons were urged to postpone non-essential travel to the United States or Mexico as senior officials held emergency talks over the deadly outbreak of swine flu.
The European Union's health commissioner Andorra Vassiliou met EU foreign ministers on the subject and advised people to reassess their travel plans.
Just heard details on Sky News. These two cases are a couple who went to Canc?n, M?xico. They came back last Tuesday 21st April, felt ill 3 days later and consulted on Friday 24th April. Samples were taken on Saturday 25th April. They were questioned on who they had contacts with, as they were out and about until the Saturday. The authorities drew up a list of 22 people. Of these, 7 are showing mild symptoms of a flu-like illness. The authorities are now trying to trace the contacts of the 7...
[Comments:
1. First time we heard of Canc?n as a place where you can get swine flu, therefore it must be assumed that there is silent propagation of the virus everywhere in the country, as Canc?n is pretty far from the epicentre of the illness.
2. Since it takes a whole night and a morning to fly from Canc?n to Europe, and assuming they caught it just before their departure or on the plane itself, incubation period would be 5 days.
3. Though attempting to trace all contacts is commendable, this couple must have had contacts with unknown people in shops, towns, transport and elsewhere. One would therefore assume that in their home town, there will be others that will be sick.
4. That goes also for the 7 who now have mild symmptoms. Even more so, since their symptoms were mild, they might have been out and about, gone to work or meetings.
5. Containment, as the course of action recommended by WHO, seems illusory.

Swine Flu: Health Q & A
What is it? Could I catch it?
Your questions answered.
Chief Medical Officer Sir Liam Donaldson told Sky News that in the event of a pandemic "well-rehearsed" plans were in place "to combat the problem".
"The aim will be to try to reduce the impact and we have measures in place to treat people with antiviral drugs that don't cure but reduce the severity of the symptoms," he said.
Dr Maureen Baker, the honorary secretary of the Royal College of General Practitioners, said flu sufferers can expect to recover within a week - even if it is swine flu.
Sir Liam added: "There will be people who will be vulnerable and we can't be complacent, but on the other hand the majority of cases of flu tend to be an illness that people recover from."
Michael O'Leary, the boss of Ryanair which does not operate flights to Mexico, played down the danger to travellers.
"It is a tragedy only for people living... in slums in Asia or Mexico, but will the honeymoon couple from Edinburgh die? No," he said.
He added that "a couple of Strepsils will do the job".
We're in the decisive moment of the crisis. The number of deaths will continue rising.
Mexico's health minister Jose Angel Cordova
The Foreign Office has advised against all but essential travel to Mexico over the swine flu outbreak.
On its website, the FCO also said routine consular and all visa services at its embassy in Mexico City had been suspended until further notice.
The FCO revised its advice after the World Health Organisation warned countries to prepare for a full-blown pandemic.
So far, the only deaths from the outbreak have been reported in Mexico, where the death toll from the flu now stands at 152.
