  • Big increase in Swedish H1N1 cases

    Last week over 100 people were infected with swine flu in Sweden, double the the week before. This season so far, 67 patients have been admitted to hospital with swine flu, of these, eight have had to go into intensive care. Most of those who have been hospitalized have been between 15 and 64 years old.

    The increase is expected to continue for another few weeks, with the largest increase in V?rmland and SMI wants those in the risk groups to get vaccinated.

    "The problem we have is that some of those who get infected by swine flu become seriously ill," said Annika Linde, city epidemiologist at SMI to Swedish Radio news.

    Those at risk are people over 65, those with heart and lung disease and other serious illness, children with multiple disabilities, and the extremely overweight and pregnant. The vaccine used is the same Pandemrix type used in the 2009 outbreak, which caused narcolepsy among children.

    After receiving the Pandemrix swine flu vaccination in 2009, 177 cases of narcolepsi were reported in Sweden, according to TT.

    More swine influenza in V?stmanland

    V?stmanland also increases morbidity rates even if county is relatively spared than so long.

    Two v?stmanl?nningar has fallen in swine influenza during the first week and so far this week. Thus, a total of four persons in the county diagnosed with swine influenza during the season.
    Meanwhile, six new cases of s?songsinfluensa found.

      - Svininfluensan is undoubtedly in the county now.
      Only during the last week we have confirmed about 10 persons who are infected with swine influenza, H1N1precisely. Now, there is also the infected persons scattered across the county, says Claes S?derstr?m.
      When it is now becoming more common in the county spreads the itself also in the age group. This week has many young people who have fallen ill.

        Big jump this week in the number of flu cases



        The number of flu cases are up in Sweden, and the swine-flu, Influenza A (H1N1), accounts for the biggest jump in cases.

        The number of known influenza cases rose this week from 361 to 445. Half of the cases were swine flu.

        So far, in total, there have been 1,811 cases of influenza reported this season.

        The Institute for Communicable Disease Control says it is not certain when the wave of influenza cases will slow down. But it expects the trend to continue well into February. The institute advises all people who are extremely sick or in risk groups to seek care.
