Portugal - confirmed cases of A/H1N1 - 1,377 ; 17 new in hospital
A second cases of the A H1N1 strain of the Influenza Virus, otherwise known as ?Swine Flu? was confirmed this week in Portugal as medical checks on incoming aircraft are dropped.
The patient, identified as a 33-year-old man, is being treated in Oporto?s S?o Jo?o Hospital.
He travelled last weekend from New York to Oporto, via Frankfurt on a Lufthansa flight during which, according to reports, he was already showing typical signs of the A H1N1 virus, including high fever, coughing and muscular pains.
After arriving in Oporto, instead of going straight to a hospital the man first went home and then made his way to the S?o Jo?o unit.
Medical staff from the hospital said then when he arrived at S?o Jo?o the man was wearing a mask over his mouth and was conscious of the fact he may be infected with the A H1N1 virus.
This was later confirmed and the man was admitted to isolation room where he is being kept as a preventative measure to avoid being a contagion.
Following the confirmation the Portuguese Ministry of Health asked Lufthansa for the flight?s passenger list and is contacting twelve Portuguese citizens who shared the journey with the infected man.
Several family and friends with whom the patient had contact before making his way to hospital are also being treated with antiviral medication for prevention.
Meanwhile, despite a second confirmed case in this country, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has said it does not represent increased concern for Portugal.
WHO currently maintains its ?Swine Flu? pandemic alert at level 5. So far 17,410 people have been infected with the mutated form of the flu virus, which originated in Mexico. It has been confirmed in 62 countries and killed 115 people to date.
Following the initial outbreak, medical staff at Lisbon Airport intervened in direct flights arriving from Mexico, asking if passengers felt ill or were showing signs of the virus.
According to recent reports this is no longer the case and medical checks are no longer being exercised at Portuguese airports.
Health Minister Ana Jorge justified this by saying Mexico was no longer the initial point of control and that cases of infection could come from anywhere.
Despite there being informative posters around airports, it is now left to individuals to take action if they feel ill.
More than one month after the epidemic?s initial outbreak little is still known about the characteristics of the virus or of the individuals who have died from it.

Another four people are currently being investigated on suspicion they may have contracted the influenza A (H1N1) confirmed this morning by the Public Health Director-General Francis George.

A new case of infection with influenza virus A (H1N1) has been confirmed by the Ministry of Health, which now counts on six the number of cases registered in Portugal.
The positive case is a man of 26 years who returned on 14 June the United States and whose infection was laboratory confirmed over the last night.
"The patient is hospitalized at the Hospital Curry Cabral and the clinical situation is stable. The close contacts of individuals are being identified," states the Ministry of Health disclosed in a note.
In all, during the night, four cases were under investigation suspected of infection by this virus, has been one confirmed and two others away.
"It remains under investigation of these cases and laboratory research began two cases, a total of three. The results are expected for the end of the day," said the Ministry of Health
Notification to the World Health Organization this change is being made pursuant to the International Health Regulations.

The Ministry of Health confirmed Friday that the existence of two more cases, bringing to nine the number of Portuguese people infected with the H1N1 virus.
The confirmed cases relate to a woman of 40 years who returned on June 21 from Palma de Majorca and a man of 27 years who returned on June 22 in Argentina.

In the last 24 hours have been recorded five cases of influenza A (H1N1), one for secondary transmission, bringing to 47 the number of infected in Portugal.
Of the five cases, three are men and are at the Hospital Curry Cabral, Lisbon.
One of the men of 49 years, returned from the United Kingdom, while another man of 43 years, passed through Spain and Italy. The third case, a couple of 22 years, is a state of secondary transmission.
In Hospital de Dona Estef?nia, also in Lisbon, is hospitalized a teenager of 13 years, from Palma de Mallorca, and a girl of nine years, which came from the Dominican Republic.
Since early May, 47 were confirmed cases of influenza A (H1N1), three of them by secondary transmission.

Of the new patients, 98 are men and 79 women, aged between 9 months and 55 years.
Ten people remain hospitalized, three of them with "a clinical picture that inspires concern", including a woman hospitalized in Hospital de S?o Jo?o, in Porto, with "reserved prognosis.
The remaining six patients admitted to have high in the coming days.
The Ministry of Health says it is justified "attention": although the majority of cases the disease is benign, more serious situations may arise in people who had other diseases before being infected with the influenza virus.
Since the disease was first recorded in Portugal in May this year, 1,061 people have been sick, most of which "is already cured and returned to their daily lives."

The Directorate General of Health confirmed 149 more cases of H1N1 virus infection at the end of Saturday. These new confirmations, 99 relate to the men and 50 women. Most patients are between 21 to 30 years, but nevertheless there are cases that range from 10 months to 71 years of age.
There are currently 20 people hospitalized, three with "reserved prognosis" and two that inspire care, but with a favorable development. The other fifteen will be high in the coming days.
