                    Week 13

Since the start of surveillance (September), 744 severe cases of confirmed influenza admitted to intensive care have been reported, of which 160 have died. For the first time since the 2009/2010 season all the regions, excluding Molise, report the presence of confirmed serious cases of influenza admitted to intensive care. 90% of deaths (one of which was imported) occurred in people over 25 years of age. In 13 cases, the deceased did not present pre-existing risk conditions and 2 women were pregnant. In 304 (52%) severe cases the A / H1N1pdm09 virus was isolated, in 214 (37%) the B virus, in 9 (2%) cases the A / H3N2 virus, in 53 (9%) cases a virus A / not subtyped. The collected data are used to estimate the number of severe and severe cases of influenza confirmed by age on a weekly basis and describe the clinical features of the disease. It is likely that the numbers provided are underestimated because the reported cases, 58% male, with an average age of 60 (0-104), 84% had at least one predisposing risk condition complicating the clinical conditions (diabetes, tumors, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases chronic, etc.). Fifteen serious cases occurred in pregnant women. All cases were admitted to an Intensive and / or sub-intensive Therapy Unit (63 required ECMO support and 314 were intubated).
