  • Italy: alarm for the many severe cases of influenza H1N1 - 648 in ICU and 163 deaths

At 10.45 on Wednesday an email of the San Gerardo di Monza reaches the most important centers of italian resuscitation: "The intensive therapies are clogged from patients who are just emerging from the ECMO (the machine that takes the place of the lungs, ndr ) or are so serious as to be able to need". It was for years since we saw an influence so virulent. The reason for this? The serious respiratory distress caused by the virus. The situation is heavy: only in the last few days well ten sick had to be attached to the machine that is allowed to stand the lungs, a support lifesaving, but decidedly invasive and, therefore, used in very serious cases. At least four - within 24 hours - women who are pregnant or have just given birth that have had need to be helped from the ECMO (which stands for oxygenation with lung membrane). Among patients with severe complications, such as explaining the Policlinico di Milano, especially young people. AND the situation is worsening. The H1N1 virus is not an influence any. The doctors have recognized the virus H1N1, more commonly known as the swine flu. "From the beginning of December to January 16, the network of centers of reference has managed 73 patients of which 37 treated with Ecmo - it is law in the email -. On 16 January there were currently 16 Ecmo simultaneously. And, since then, the situation has been worsening". The photograph comes from San Gerardo di Monza because the primary Antonio Pesenti and, together with Alberto Zangrillo of San Raffaele, Milan, coordinator of the network of 14 centers with the machines save-lungs. "A great lines - explain from San Gerardo - more than 80% of the patients has the flu TO (the majority with confirmed H1N1) ".
