  • Condition of Swine Flu Patient in Iceland Critical

A 30-year-old woman, who was infected by the of the swine flu A(H1N1) virus, was admitted is to the Landsp?tali national hospital?s ICU on Wednesday. Her condition is critical. She hadn?t been vaccinated and had underlying risk factors.

?It has been confirmed that between ten and 20 people have been infected with the swine flu in Iceland,? Chief Epidemiologist at the Directorate of Health Haraldur Briem told Fr?ttabladid.

?We are also monitoring influenza-like symptoms and more than 100 such incidents have been registered. It is very likely that these are cases of swine flu as it has been confirmed here,? Briem explained. ?However, we are hoping that vaccination will reduce the epidemic significantly.?

The ICU wards in many of Iceland?s neighboring countries are currently under considerable pressure because of the increasing cases of swine flu, Briem said, but infections haven?t spread as much in Iceland.

Briem advised those who have yet to be vaccinated to do so.
