Hungary confirms first H1N1 flu case

BUDAPEST, May 29 (Reuters) - Hungary has identified its first confirmed case of the new H1N1 flu, Chief Medical Officer Ferenc Falus said on Friday.

"It is a Brazilian citizen who arrived in Budapest from New York a few days ago," Falus told Reuters, without giving further details.

The young man, who lives in New York and came to Hungary as a tourist, fell ill in the northern Hungarian city Eger but has since recovered, Health Minister Tamas Szekely told the national news agency MTI.

His first test in the local hospital was negative but further checks at the National Centre for Epidemiology identified the H1N1 virus, he said.

"(The authorities) have taken up the contact with him to get help in finding those persons whom he met while he was infected," Szekely was quoted as saying.

Falus said the man remained in Hungary.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said early on Friday that more than 15,500 cases of the new H1N1 flu had been reported in the world including 99 deaths, most of them in Mexico.

Hungary reports first death from H1N1 flu

            Wed Jul 22, 2009 9:02am EDT

BUDAPEST (Reuters) - A Hungarian man has died from H1N1 flu, the government said on Wednesday, the first death in the country from the new virus which has killed more than 700 people worldwide since it emerged in April.

The 41-year-old man had heart and lung disease which combined with the virus infection led to his death, surgeon general Ferenc Falus told a news conference.

"From the sample taken during the autopsy for the first time we could identify the new type AH1N1V virus," he said.

So far Hungary has had 37 cases of the new flu. Two patients are currently in hospital with mild symptoms.

The World Health Organization (WHO), which declared an H1N1 influenza pandemic on June 11, said last week the new flu was the fastest-moving pandemic ever.

Some 125,000 laboratory-confirmed cases have been reported worldwide as of Tuesday, it said.

Hungary declares first swine flu-related death
              (AFP) ? 9 hours ago

BUDAPEST ? Hungary announced on Wednesday its first swine flu-related death, after an autopsy showed the victim, who apparently died of pneumonia on July 15, was carrying the virus.

"A 41-year old man died of pneumonia last Wednesday, after contracting the new flu virus," chief medical officer Ferenc Falus said.

The victim had not sought any medical help despite suffering from a heart and lung condition and he had not developed a fever, Falus said.

He had died suddenly in a "public space", the medical officer added, without giving any more details.

The victim's family members had been tested for swine flu but were not found to be carrying the disease, he also said.

So far, 37 people -- including the deceased -- have been infected with the A(H1N1) virus in Hungary, Falus said. Hungary confirmed its first case on May 29, when a Brazilian tourist was diagnosed with the virus.

The government also announced Wednesday that mass-production of anti-viral drugs to combat swine flu could begin in September.

Four million doses would then be available by October, added government spokesman Domokos Szollar said after the announcement.
