      The Associated Press

(AP) ? PARIS - France's health authority says a young woman who tested positive for swine flu and also had another serious illness has died.

In a statement Thursday, the health authority said in a statement Thursday "the conclusions of a clinical evaluation are not in favor of a direct link between the virus and the death." It was a medical test that revealed the woman also had swine flu.

The statement said the victim also had a severe respiratory infection as well as her unidentified "serious illness." It did not provide the woman's name or age or any other details.

We are far from what happen in US, or Americas.
And, with all Frenchies in holidays, only a darker situation can "awaken the attention" of French people toward this true worldwide threat.
On the Beach or in the Subway, we don't react the same way, unless you are a tourist in Paris.

We are at level 5 in France , and I don't believe the health minister would move up the alert level to the Top right now.

            @SteveoSteen

The Health Minister is toying with the idea to raise the level to 6 in September, right for schools restart, according to the media in the last few days.

Actually, people are starting to be aware that something is not right. Every day the French 24hr radio broadcasts various items on H1N1. Newspapers also. I think people don't yet dare admit it, but they are now primed and watching. There's hardly a family here that doesn't have some youngster who either goes to UK or Spain for a holiday, or who knows a family who does.

The whole country will almost stop on 1st August until 30th August for sacro-sankt holidays, where the factories close and everyone escapes away, including civil servants. It will even be difficult to find a bakery open in Paris. Don't count on getting accurate figures during August.

In the summer 2003, during the heat wave, the president and ministers were on holidays in comfortable air-conditioned places, and there was no-one to raise the alarm apart from a few dedicated medical, morgue, funeral staff, and refrigerated trucks owners... The final official count was 15,000 dead "only from the heat" - they didn't count those with underlying conditions...

The French have not forgotten how TPTB behaved. Wait till September and early October when it starts being here like it is now in UK and we'll see how my fellow citizens react.

France becomes the fifth European country to register a death related to influenza. Thirty-one people died in Britain, 7 in Spain, one in Hungary and the first Thursday in Belgium. It was a woman of thirty years who succumbed to a "double viral pneumonia"

1022 confirmed or probable cases in France

Wednesday, according to a latest balance sheet, France had 1022 confirmed or probable cases, including 4 serious cases since the epidemic began. There are 852 cases in the metropolis alone: 556 confirmed cases, plus 296 probable cases that have not been virological tests.

On 29 July, 31 people were hospitalized, 27 of which are out. Only 4 adult patients (between 39 and 70 years) requiring use of intensive care: 3 bacterial pneumonia and hypoxemia (lower pressure of oxygen in the blood) poorly tolerated in an elderly person.

Tuesday, Health Minister Roselyne Bachelot has warned that the Level 6 alert plan against the virus could be declared in France in September. Today, the alert level is 5A on french soil. Last grade of the national plan against pandemic influenza, the level 6 allows you to implement a series of measures including schools, businesses and transport.

François Fillon had assured his side last Friday that the country was "ready" to confront a pandemic of influenza A (H1N1), which he considered "inevitable" in the fall.

BRUSSELS - A young woman died Thursday in Belgium as a result of contamination of influenza virus A (H1N1), becoming the first victim of this disease in the country, announced the Belgian Interdepartmental Commission on Influenza.

This young woman of thirty years, who lives in the province of Antwerp (north), was admitted Monday in a hospital emergency service, after the source felt "weak flu-like symptoms" such as headache, slight fever and cough, said this organization in a statement.

His condition then was "not worrying" according to doctors. But it eventually died Thursday morning of a "double viral pneumonia" despite intensive care. "The analysis at the same time confirmed the presence of influenza virus A (H1N1)," said the press release.

"The pneumonia suffered by the young woman is a complication caused by influenza," said the AFP to a spokesperson of the Commission Inter.

Belgium became the fourth country in the European Union to register a death related to influenza virus, after Britain, which totals 31 dead according to a latest balance sheet, with seven deaths Spain and Hungary, with one dead .

In Belgium, recent statistics show an acceleration in the number of infections in the population, with approximately 700 cases since April 27. But if 126 cases were registered between April 27 and July 13, 600 were recorded during the next two weeks, according to estimates by the Interministerial Commission of Belgium.
The latter, however, these figures into perspective by considering that they were no more worrying than those associated with seasonal influenza in recent years...
