H1N1 vaccine offered to general population

    Friday, 12 February 2010 10:44 KR News

Now that the worst of the Influenza A H1N1 epidemic has passed, health authorities are offering spare vaccines to all

The Health Ministry has announced that excess Influenza A H1N1 vaccines will be offered to the general population free of charge, after the Influenza A epidemic did not affect Danish patients as much as was expected.

Health care workers, key employees and patients in at-risk categories were offered the vaccine last year and almost 1 million people were vaccinated.

The national disease control agency, Statens Serum Institut, initially ordered 3.1 million doses of the antibiotic to protect the most susceptible groups in the population.

But in January the agency agreed with manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline to reduce its order to 2.2 million, saving 45 million kroner.

About 500,000 Danes were infected with the virus and a further 500,000 were given the vaccine as a preventative measure.

The vaccine is available free from GPs, but will require a doctor?s fee for its administration.

?The remaining vaccines can now be offered to people outside the risk group who want to be vaccinated. I think it?s a good offer and the best is that we have now come through the worst of the epidemic, which was relatively mild,? Health Minister Jakob Axel Nielsen told public broadcaster DR.
