  • Tragedy as brave heart op baby Lacey falls victim to a common cold

A TWO-year-old girl who survived open-heart surgery and swine flu has died of a cold.

Lacey Hancock-Weston died in her mother's arms after contracting rhinovirus ? the medical name for the common cold.

Lacey had been recovering at Leeds General Infirmary after a major 12-hour operation to fix a narrow artery.

Her parents Carl Hancock and Karen Weston, of Hessle, revealed their little girl had also beaten swine flu weeks before her operation.

Miss Weston, 36, said: "We can't believed Lacey survived a 12-hour heart operation and swine flu only for her to die from a cold.

"Lacey was such a happy, contented little girl. She was always smiling and never let her problems get her down."

Lacey was born with pulmonary atresia with ventricular septal defect (PA-VSD) ? a condition characterised by the underdevelopment of the right side of the heart.

The operation was carried out to stretch a coronary artery, allowing more oxygen to reach her heart.

Tests were carried out in February to see if she was strong enough for the operation and revealed she'd beaten swine flu.

But her immune system had been weakened.
