    (Update with more data)

Lisbon, Mar 2 (EFE) .- The Portuguese government confirmed today the first case of coronavirus infected in the country, a man who was in northern Italy on vacation.

In addition, another man who recently traveled to Spain for work has been positive in a first analysis and the result of a new test is expected to confirm his diagnosis.

The two men, of Portuguese nationality, are admitted to two hospitals in Oporto, in the north of the country, and their status is "stable," the Minister of Health of Portugal, Marta Temido, told a news conference.

This is the first confirmation of coronavirus in Portugal, which had already announced that two of its citizens had tested positive aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship, moored south of Tokyo.

According to the minister, the infected is a 60-year-old doctor who was on vacation "in the northern part of Italy" and who presented the first symptoms this Saturday, although his state of health is "good."

Regarding the case awaiting confirmation, it is known that he is a 33-year-old man who was a few days ago in Valencia and who felt the first symptoms on February 26.

Both situations are known after this weekend increased the vigilance of the Portuguese authorities after learning that the Chilean writer Luis Sep?lveda, who was in Portugal last week, has been admitted to northern Spain by coronavirus.

The Directorate General of Health (DGS) lusa informed on Sunday that it is in contact with the Spanish authorities and seeks all the close contacts that the Chilean maintained in Portugal, where he participated in the literary festival Correntes d'Escritas, held in P?voa de Varzim ( north).

The authorities strive to contact the attendees - especially those who had direct contact with Sep?lveda - to find out if there are more symptoms, and there are already at least 20 people related to the quarantined event, mainly officials of the Municipality of P?voa de Varzim and workers from festival.

The search, however, is not terminated, and especially covers those who were with Sep?lveda and his wife - with symptoms but without confirmed diagnosis - less than a meter away, in enclosed spaces or in the same car, who have live with them or have been given health care contact the authorities.

"(It seems that) he would have arrived in Portugal already with symptoms," Portuguese president Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa told reporters today, who was cautious because the investigation into Sepulveda's circumstances is still ongoing.

An issue that if confirmed "would make a difference" because, he recalled, the two cases reported today have the origin of contagion Italy and Spain, which means that an outbreak from Portuguese territory has not yet been identified.

Therefore, the president appealed for calm and said that having cases is framed within European normality.

"It is the so-called long-awaited news. It was surprising that having cases in so many countries in Europe there were none in Portugal," said Rebelo de Sousa. EFE
