    Respiratory disease
    50 thousand hospitalized with pneumonia

    by DIANA MENDESHoje

Data from the national observatory, that the DN had access, shows that from 2003 to 2008 rose by 19% in hospital with pneumonia. Tobacco and overuse of antibiotics are among those responsible

The number of patients admitted to hospitals with pneumonia increased by 19% in just six years. According to data from the National Observatory of Respiratory Diseases (Ondr) in 2008 were registered 50 890 hospitalizations due to this disease, more than 8101 in 2003.

Pneumonia was the cause of two thirds of admissions in the group of respiratory diseases, keeping an upward trend, unlike other diseases such as asthma or tuberculosis.
Artur Teles Ara?jo, pulmonologist and coordinator of the DN Ondr showed that hospitalizations for respiratory diseases continue to rise, but mainly due to pneumonia, "which has steadily increased.

Is that in addition to those admissions, over 24 143 cases of people admitted that in addition to pneumonia, also have other diseases. That is, in total there were 75,033 admissions involving pneumonia, and in 40.5% (50890) was the only major disease and the hospital.

However, last year, deaths following complications of the disease fell from 6359 to 4321, this number may however, have risen this year, admits Teles Ara?jo given the increase in recorded cases. Sure, he says, is that "remains a major cause of death." This situation may worsen if now, with influenza A, which often degenerates into pneumonia.

One reason for the increase in admissions is the gradual aging of the population. Another is smoking,
"Tobacco consumption weakens people and contributes to the development of respiratory infections," said the expert, noting that other factors are the drugs to excess. "People take antibiotics incorrectly, leading to the disease to become resistant," she emphasizes.

The disease affects the elderly bathing suits severe and testing each year show that 15% already had it. Mortality, however, is much higher in Portugal than in other European countries (see box).

A total of respiratory diseases, which included other problems in addition to pneumonia, the hospital recorded 185 380 hospitalizations, almost 61 thousand more than in 2003. "These diseases remain the third leading cause of death in Portugal and affect thousands of people every year."

Data from the Center for 2008 result also highlight the decline of tuberculosis cases as the sole cause of hospitalization (from 1400 to 1326 a year). With asthma is the same: decreased from 3040 to 2851. Teles Ara?jo advances that "asthma is still underdiagnosed, such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)": "People are not to appreciate the symptoms and will not deal with."

The law of tobacco helped mainly non-smokers, but not enough. "People continue to smoke and should post more on prevention," says Teles Ara?jo, stating that pollution levels are also another concern, because together with tobacco causes respiratory infections and allergies. These diseases, particularly rhinitis, maintains an upward trend.
