An alarming spike in pneumonia cases among children has been detected in the Netherlands, mirroring a similar surge in China.

Dutch health experts say a striking number have been sickened since rates began soaring in August, with most cases among those aged five to 14.

Surveillance data shows rates of the illness, which can prove life-threatening, are already nearly twice as high as the peak recorded last year.

It comes as China battles its own 'mystery' pneumonia cluster, with media stating hospitals as being 'overwhelmed with sick children'.

A new mystery repository virus ripping through China appears to now be surging in Europe as cases among children were detected in the Netherlands.

Experts are rushing to figure out what the out-of-control form of pneumonia travelling through parts of Asia is, with hospitals in the capital 'overwhelmed with unwell youngsters. Now Dutch health experts fear the alarming illness, which can prove to be life-threatening, could be in their country.

The Netherlands Institute for Health Services Research said a higher number of patients with pneumonia than expected has been recorded, with most cases among those aged five to 14. Data shows 103 per 100,000 children were diagnosed.

What diseases are currently prevalent?

1. Pneumonia (pneumonia)

What stands out:

• Since week 31 (early August), more patients with pneumonia have been visiting their GP than in previous years. We also look at years before the corona pandemic.
• There are a striking number of children and young people with pneumonia. In week 46 (13-19 November), the number of children aged 5 to 14 years with pneumonia increased to 103 per 100,000 children. At its peak last year, there were 58 per 100,000 children.
• General practitioners also see more pneumonia in the group of young people between 15 and 24 years old than in previous years. In week 46 this number does not increase further but decreases slightly.
• In young children (0-4 years), the number of pneumonias has been increasing since week 38 (18-24 September), but the figures are lower than in 2019, before the corona pandemic.
• Relatively speaking, pneumonia is most common in older adults, as in previous years. However, in week 46 we see a slight decrease in the number of people aged 65 or older with pneumonia.

A mysterious outbreak of pediatric pneumonia cases in the Netherlandscontinues to grow, as experts are left puzzled by what could be causing the illnesses.

Around 103 out of every 100,000 children between the ages of 5 and 14 in the European nation fell ill with pneumonia during the week that ended November 19. It is a nearly 25% increase from the previous week, when 83 cases were reported for every 100,000 members of the age group.

The Netherlands Institute for Health Services Research (NIVEL), also reported an increase of 124 cases to 143 cases among children 4 and younger.

“There are a striking number of children and young people with pneumonia,” the research institute in Utrecht, just south of Amsterdam, wrote in Dutch in its weekly report.

For comparison, there were around 20 children between the ages of 5 and 14, and around 80 in children 4 or younger, last year.

On top of the increases among children, NIVEL also says that Dutch doctors are reporting more cases of pneumonia in people 15 to 24 than usual as well.
