During the 2006 H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza epizootic in Turkey there was the one of the biggest cluster of human cases ever detected for this virus in the world.

WHO at that time, dispatched an emergency epidemiological investigation team, to ascertain whether an human-to-human transmission was established -especially in the Kurdistan region.

Luckily, the virus remained localized and no community transmission happened.

Luckily, the virus remained localized and no community transmission happened.
News reports indicated that as many as 22 individuals may have been infected with H5N1 in Turkey during a 25+ day period between December 16, 2005 and January 10, 2006. They were from scattered provinces including Corum, Sivas, Samsun, Kastamonu, and Agri. The majority of the confirmed cases were from Doğubayazıt in Agri Province (where the dead chickens were found yesterday, post 1). Three family clusters of H5N1 were detected in 2005-2006 in Doğubayazıt.

Despite the media reports of quarantine and chicken cullings in 2005-2006, the only reason H5N1 didn't spread as a pandemic virus was because of its inability to easily infect and spread among human hosts at that time.

Added note: only 12 human cases of H5N1 were confirmed by WHO in Turkey during this period in 2005-2006.
