The Turkish authorities imposed quarantine in a village the North-West Turkey, non-loin of the border with Greece, after the discovery of the virus of the avian flu in chickens, brought back Tuesday the agency Anatolia.

The virus was detected in the village of Esetçe, in the area of Ipsala, near the Greek border, after the death of several chickens, indicated the sub-prefect's wife of the area Aylin Kirci.

At least two confirmed cases of virus of the avian flu were recorded since the beginning of the year in Turkey.

The avian flu killed four children in January 2006 in a small city of the east of Turkey before being spread in more than one third of the 81 Turkish provinces.

Turkey was the first country out of the areas of the east and the south-east of Asia where human beings succumbed to virus H5N1.

According to figures' of the World Health Organization, since 2003, the H5N1 already made 235 died everywhere in the world.

WHO fears that the epizooty of avian flu is not transformed into pandemia devastator following a change of the H5N1 which would make it very contagious of man to man.

Les autorités turques ont imposé une quarantaine dans un village du nord-ouest de la Turquie, non-loin de la frontière avec la Grèce, après la découverte du virus de la grippe aviaire chez des poulets, a rapporté mardi l'agence Anatolie.

Le virus a été détecté dans le village d'Esetçe, dans la région d'Ipsala, à proximité de la frontière grecque, après la mort de plusieurs poulets, a indiqué la sous-préfete de la région Aylin Kirci.

"Tout est sous contrôle", a souligné la responsable qui a toutefois ordonné une quarantaine pour le petit village où les entrées et sorties de volailles ont été interdites.

Au moins deux cas confirmés de virus de la grippe aviaire ont été enregistrés depuis le début de l'année en Turquie.

La grippe aviaire a tué quatre enfants en janvier 2006 dans une petite ville de l'est de la Turquie avant de se répandre dans plus d'un tiers des 81 provinces turques.

La Turquie a été le premier pays hors des régions de l'est et du sud-est de l'Asie où des êtres humains ont succombé au virus H5N1.

Selon des chiffres de l'Organisation mondiale de la Santé, depuis 2003, le H5N1 a déjà fait 235 morts partout dans le monde.

L'OMS craint que l'épizootie de grippe aviaire ne se transforme en pandémie dévastatrice suite à une mutation du H5N1 qui le rendrait très contagieux d'homme à homme.

Turkey has filed an OIE report on another H5N1 outbreak near Esetece close to the border with Greece (see satellite map). The multiple H5N1 outbreaks on or near the Black Sea coast, raise questions about the lack of reports from neighboring countries.

Based on sequence data from H5N1 in Romania and the Crimea Peninsula, it is likely that the H5N1 will be clade 2.2.3 and close related to the Uvs Lake strain.

Three villages were quarantined and nearly 2,000 birds culled last month after tests proved the presence of bird flu in another province in northwestern Turkey.
Turkey lies on the migratory route for wild birds flying south from Scandinavia and Siberia to north Africa for winter.
