Goose with bird flu at Öland village: "High pathogen"
Confirmed bird flu of the type that causes sudden illness where birds die acutely, sometimes with swollen head and bleeding.
It concerns a wild greylag goose in Egby on the eastern side of Öland that was discovered in mid-November.
Borgholm municipality • 01 December 2021 13:00 • 01 December 2021 15:09
The sampling was carried out on 17 November and now the report comes from SVA (Statens veterinärmedicinska anstalt).
"A greylag goose found in Borgholm municipality is positive for highly pathogenic bird flu H5N1."
In fact, the find was made in the area around Egby, on the eastern side of Öland. It was about a wild greylag goose, female.
Only avian influenza of the H5N1 subtype is notifiable under the Swedish Communicable Diseases Act. An outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza is often characterized by a very sudden onset of illness with many birds dying acutely (read the fact box).
The infection control at the County Administrative Board in Kalmar has been notified of the case. Ölandsbladet wrote just over a month ago about the first confirmed case on Öland in just over four years.
