Extremadura confirms a case of the 'avian influenza' virus in a goose
          Agronews Castile and León
          August 18, 2022

The Junta de Extremadura has confirmed, through the National Regency Laboratory, the arrest of the H5N1 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influence virus (HPAI) in the carcass of a goose that has been found dead in the municipality of Mérida. Likewise, from the Ministry it is reported that there are no signs of outbreaks of poultry.

The detected subtype, H5N1, is the one that is affecting Europe this year and does not have a significant zoonotic capacity, that is, its ability to be transmitted to people is very low. In any case, this virus cannot be transmitted to humans through cooked poultry meat, eggs or processed products derived from them. However, it is recommended to minimize unnecessary contact with birds showing clinical symptoms or dead in the field.

Huelva suffers the second outbreak of bird flu in 9 days and both are located in the Sierra de Aracena
            20 August, 2022

It is the second outbreak of avian flu that is declared in the province of Huelva with a narrow margin of 9 days. Two farms located in the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche have had to sacrifice the birds they had, something that is part of the protocol established by the health authority to stop the spread.

The first of this month of August was at a turkey farm in La Nava, where 15,000 animals were slaughtered and now it has been declared, very close, in Aracena. This time it has been in a chicken farm, a total of 37,000 animals distributed in two ships that have had to be immediately slaughtered.

The National Reference Laboratory for Avian Influenza in Spain, the Central Laboratory of Algete, has confirmed this new outbreak of avian influenza in the province of Huelva. This is the 30th focus of this disease in Andalusia, the eighth in the province of Huelva; 22 have been registered in the one in Seville, although this one, together with the one notified ten days ago, occurred after five months without registering any focus.

The suspicion of the disease in the Aracena farm was derived from the detection and communication on August 16 of a picture with an abnormal increase in mortality in one of the farm's buildings. The samples taken during the official inspection visit carried out by the Official Veterinary Services (OVS) of the Junta de Andalucía were sent to the Central Veterinary Laboratory of Algete, where it has been confirmed that it is a strain of HPAI subtype H5N1, continuing with all the established protocol.

The veterinary services of the Andalusian administration proceeded immediately to the immobilization of the affected farm, carrying out an epidemiological survey in order to find out the possible origin of the outbreak and farms at risk due to the movement of people and vehicles, the slaughter of the entire census of the exploitation and elimination of feed and other materials that could carry the virus.
            Protocol

A restriction zone has been established around the outbreak with a 3 km protection zone and a 3-10 km surveillance zone. In the restriction zone there are 4 chicken and turkey farms for fattening within a radius of 3 km (protection zone) and 8 chicken and turkey farms for fattening within a radius of 10 km (surveillance zone).

As in the previous outbreaks detected in the provinces of Seville and Huelva, the analysis carried out has shown that it is avian influenza of the H5N1 subtype, which is the one that has been affecting Europe in recent months. It should be remembered that this has not shown zoonotic capacity, however, exposure to birds that show any symptoms compatible with the disease or that are found dead in the field is not recommended. The virus cannot be transmitted to humans through cooked poultry, eggs, or processed products derived from them...

New cases of bird flu in Extremadura and Cantabria
              09/01/2022
This week several cases of bird flu have been confirmed in Cantabria and Extremadura.

On the one hand, the Department of Rural Development, Livestock, Fisheries, Food and the Environment of Cantabria has activated the action protocol in the community in the presence of two cases of avian flu found in two gannets on the beaches of Arenillas and Sonabia, in the municipality of Castro Urdiales.

The central veterinary laboratory of Algete, in Madrid, has confirmed the detection of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza virus (HPAI) H5N1, a strain of low zoonotic capacity.

The Ministry has notified the detected cases to the Veterinary Alert Health Network of the Ministry of Agriculture. It has also reported the presence of the disease to the town councils located in the area of influence so that they can inform their neighbors of the preventive measures they must adopt, and the Regional Agricultural Office of the affected area.

Virus detected in a turkey farm in Ahillones

For its part, the Junta de Extremadura has confirmed the arrest of the H5N1 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influence (HPAI) virus in a turkey farm located in the municipality of Ahillones, in the province of Badajoz. This is the first case of avian influenza in poultry in Extremadura this year. The suspicion derived from the detection of an abnormal increase in mortality.
This is the first case of avian influenza in poultry in Extremadura this year

The Official Veterinary Services of the Board have urgently adopted the measures established in European regulations for these cases, aimed at reinforcing official control over poultry farms in the area to ensure biosecurity. In addition, the regional government will continue with passive surveillance in poultry farms and wildlife.

Second outbreak of avian flu in Guadalajara that forces the slaughter of 150,000 laying hens

The Central Veterinary Laboratory of Algete has confirmed the detection of avian flu in a laying hen farm located within a radius of three kilometers from the one detected on September 12. With these, there are 36 outbreaks of avian influenza H5N1 notified in poultry in Spain in 2022.

It is a laying farm with an approximate census of 150,000 animals, distributed in 4 ships. The suspicion of the disease was derived from the detection and communication of an abnormal increase in mortality in the past. Measures have already been taken, such as the immediate immobilization of the affected farm from the moment of suspicion, the performance of the epidemiological survey, and the slaughter and official destruction of the corpses, feed and everything that could carry the virus. In addition, a restriction zone has been established around the outbreak: 3 km of protection zone and 3-10 km of surveillance zone.
