The H5N1 avian flu virus appears in Huelva: 41,000 chickens are sacrificed in Villarrasa

The Consejería de Agricultura, Ganadería, Pesca y Desarrollo Sostenible has today declared an outbreak of avian influenza in a broiler farm located in the municipality of Villarrasa , in the province of Huelva, after confirming the Central Veterinary Laboratory of Algete on the detection of the virus of High Pathogenic Avian Influenza (IAAP) in this farm.

By the Veterinary Authorities of Andalucía, the municipality of Andalucía had been included in the special surveillance zone for avian influenza , an area in which, due to the epidemiological situation of the disease in Europe, additional measures were taken to prevent possible buds of the disease in domestic birds.

It is about an exploitation of broilers , distributed in two ships, with a census of 41,000 pollos of six weeks of age .

The suspicion of the illness was derived from the detection of an abnormal increase in mortality in one of the two ships and that began on the 28th of January . The samples taken by the professionals of the Veterinary Services were sent to the Central Veterinary Laboratory of Algete, as the National Aviation Influenza Reference Laboratory in Spain, which has confirmed that it is a strain of HPAI subtype H5N1 . Throughout this process, the Council has been in permanent communication with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.

While the possible origin of the focus remains under the study, wild birds are considered to be the most probable source...

Declared an outbreak of bird flu in a laying hen farm in Íscar
    February 9, 2022

Given the appearance of abnormally high mortalities in a laying hen farm in the municipality of Íscar, the Official Veterinary Services of the Board have proceeded to the precautionary immobilization of said poultry farm. Yesterday, the samples were sent to the Central Veterinary Laboratory of Algete, which confirmed the H5N1 virus disease.

Once the outbreak has been confirmed, the mandatory legal measures consist of the establishment of a restriction zone comprising two zones around the affected holding: a first protection zone based on a radius of three kilometers from the outbreak site and a second a surveillance zone with a minimum radius of ten kilometers.

The total census held by the farms in the restricted area is 1,114,120 birds...

Cases of HPAI H5N1 avian influenza in poultry in Spain rise to four
        02/10/2022
        206

The Central Veterinary Laboratory of Algete has confirmed the detection of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza virus (HPAI) in two poultry farms in the provinces of Huelva and Valladolid, respectively. This is the third and fourth outbreak of HPAI H5N1 in poultry in Spain, after the detection of a first outbreak in a turkey fattening farm in the province of Segovia on January 18 and a second outbreak in a farm broilers in the province of Huelva on February 2, according to the latest report prepared by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) .

The first of the outbreaks confirmed in the last hours corresponds to a fattening turkey farm distributed in five warehouses, with an approximate census of 39,500 two-month-old chickens, located in the municipality of Niebla, in the province of Huelva, which It is located within a 10-kilometre radius (restricted zone) of the declared focus on broiler farms on February 2 in the municipality of Villarrasa. The suspicion of the disease came from the detection of an abnormal increase in mortality in two of the five ships that began on February 6. The samples taken by the Andalusian OVS were sent to the Central Veterinary Laboratory of Algete, as the National Reference Laboratory for Avian Influenza in Spain, where it was confirmed that it is an HPAI subtype H5N1 strain.

The second case confirmed by the Central Veterinary Laboratory of Algete has been in a laying hen farm located in the municipality of Íscar, in the province of Valladolid. It is a farm of caged laying hens, with an approximate census of 130,000 animals. The suspicion of the disease came from the detection of an abnormal increase in mortality that began on February 7. The samples taken by the OVS of Castilla y León were sent to the Central Veterinary Laboratory of Algete, as the National Reference Laboratory for Avian Influenza in Spain, where it has been confirmed that it is an HPAI subtype H5N1 strain.

In both cases, the official veterinary services of the Junta de Andalucía and the Junta de Castilla y León have immediately adopted the following measures:

Immediate immobilization of the affected holding from the moment the outbreak is suspected.
Carrying out the epidemiological survey in order to find out the possible origin of the outbreak and farms at risk due to the movement of people and vehicles.
The slaughter of the entire census of the affected farm is being carried out and the official destruction of the corpses, feed and other stubborn materials that could carry the virus, as established in the Sandach regulations.
Establishment of a restriction zone around the focus: 3 kilometers of protection zone (where there are three commercial farms and one for self-consumption for the Niebla farm; and five commercial farms and four for self-consumption for the Íscar farm) and 3- 10 kilometers of surveillance zone (where there are 15 commercial farms and 9 self-consumption farms for the Niebla farm; and 27 commercial farms and 2 self-consumption farms for the Íscar farm).

In relation to detection in wild birds, to date a total of eleven cases have been detected in 2022 in the provinces of Lleida, Girona, Ávila, Palencia, Seville, Huelva and Cádiz.

New case of bird flu, now in wild birds in Catalonia
The Ministry of Agriculture has reported a new case of avian influenza in wild birds in the province of Lleida
          Drafting | Thursday , February 10, 2022, 5:45 p.m.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries confirmed a few hours ago two new cases of the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAI) in two fattening turkey farms with censuses of approximately 8,000 and 28,800 animals, located in the municipalities of Trigueros (Huelva ) and Carmona (Seville). Although, now it has confirmed a new case of HPAI H5N1 in wild birds in the region of Segriá, province of Lleida (Catalonia).

Thus, this would be the second case to be confirmed in the province of Lleida after detecting the first that was recorded in 2022 in the Segre river , at the height of the town of Soses, Segriá region. In this first case, the birds, 4 swans (Cygnus olor) and a stork (Ciconia ciconia), were detected within the framework of the intensification of passive surveillance in wild birds included in the National Avian Influenza Surveillance Program in Spain, as a consequence of the increased risk due to the recent evolution of the epidemiological situation of the disease in northern and central Europe.

On the other hand, another Catalan region, specifically in Els Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, municipality of Castelló d'Empúries, Girona , registered a case of the HPAI H5N1 virus in wild birds at the beginning of February .

On January 12, the resolution adopting safeguard health measures to prevent the spread of avian influenza in the territory was published in the Official Gazette of the Government of Catalonia .

As of the publication of this resolution, all commercial or self-consumption poultry farms and individuals with poultry ownership will apply various prevention measures, prohibiting the use of birds of the anseriformes order (such as geese, ducks, or swans) and charadriiformes as a hunting claim, as well as the breeding of ducks and geese with other species of poultry. Outdoor poultry farming was also prohibited.

Two new farms with bird flu detected in Seville
The outbreaks are located in Carmona and Gilena and bring the total number of farms affected by the disease in Andalusia to nine
Three outbreaks of avian flu detected on farms in Andalusia
                      18 February, 2022 - 11:37 a.m.

Two new farms affected by bird flu in Seville bring to nine the total number of farms in Andalusia where outbreaks of the disease have been detected. Specifically, the new cases have been confirmed in the Seville municipalities of Carmona-El Viso and Gilena , both within the restriction zone of the latest outbreaks declared in this community.

Thus, the first farm is in the restricted area of the outbreaks declared in Carmona and El Viso del Alcor on February 10 and 14 , while the second is in the restricted area of the outbreak declared in Gilena on February 14. and, due to its epidemiological relationship, the incubator destined for the eggs that this farm produced has been preventively immobilized.

The one in Carmona is a farm with 37,100 turkeys and the one in Gilena is dedicated to the reproduction of hatching eggs with a census of 15,125 birds.

The suspicion of the disease in all cases was derived from the detection of an abnormal increase in mortality that began on February 8 and 13.

The samples taken by the Veterinary Services of the Junta de Andalucía were sent to the Central Veterinary Laboratory of Algete, as the National Reference Laboratory for Avian Influenza in Spain, where it has been confirmed that in all three cases it is a strain HPAI subtype H5N1.

So far there is no evidence that the H5N1 subtype, which has been affecting Europe in recent months, has significant zoonotic capacity...

Declared a new outbreak of avian influenza in domestic species in the vallisoletano municipality of Íscar
                          Agronews Castilla y Leon
                          February 18, 2022

This is an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 located in an exploitation of chicken ponedoras located 500 meters from the declared outbreak in the same municipality of the new days.

The census of the exploitation is of 33,477 copies. Since it is located on the radio of the protection zone of the three kilometers from the previous shoot, the restriction zone is not modified, not affecting any new poultry exploitation

Despite the high pathogenicity, it is recalled that the transmission potential of this virus is low and that, from the Council, all the biosecurity and surveillance measures are being carried out

The early detection was the result of the exhaustive surveillance of the Official Veterinary Services in the area that was subject to special control measures against the influx of wild species from European countries

The early detection, as a result of the close surveillance that the Official Veterinary Services of the Agriculture, Farming and Rural Development are carrying out in the affected area in the province of Valladolid there is a visit to be carried out.

The worst outbreak of avian flu in the history of Spain: more than 665,000 birds and there are still two months of epidemic left
                            By: Brian Adam
                            Date: February 25, 2022

First there were four wild swans and a common stork killed along the Segre riverbed. Then came the disaster. Spain has slaughtered more than 665,000 birds in a single month. The H5N1 flu has crept into poultry farms (hens and turkeys) in Castilla y León and Andalusia. Only in Carmona (Seville) 292,000 have been sacrificed; in Íscar (Valladolid) they have 163,000 laying hens.

The worst outbreak in the history of Spain. Until now, the country had managed to emerge unscathed from most major outbreaks of bird flu. However, this time things have changed. Nine provinces have already detected wild birds with the virus and four (Seville, Huelva, Valladolid and Segovia) have had outbreaks on farms; there are some that work in the open sky, but also (and this is more worrying) those that keep the animals in ships.

And we are not at the end of the epidemic Avian flu, like the rest of the flu, is a very seasonal virus. That may be the real problem right now: we still have two cold months to go before the weather turns in our favor and the epidemic fades. Meanwhile, especially if the drought persists, outbreaks will continue to occur until the entire poultry sector is on the ropes...
