Madrid confirms an outbreak of avian flu in the Polvoranca de Leganés Park
        EP | 04/27/2022

The Environmental, Living and Agriculture Council of the Community of Madrid has received this confirmation from the Central Veterinary Laboratory of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) that the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HAIA) subtype H5N1 -- known as avian flu-- this is the illness that caused the death of 105 specimens of wild birds in the Polvoranca Park, located in the municipality of Leganés.

They were found by workers in this peri-urban green space between the 16th and 18th of April, and the samples were sent to the Regional Animal Health Laboratory, which carried out a first analysis according to methods of sampling and evaluation of results. It was later confirmed that the variant affected 91 hogs, 9 geese, 4 ducks and a urchin, the Madrid government informed in a press release...

Two cases of bird flu have been identified in Gipuzkoa

            Published on: 2022/05/12 17:52 (UTC + 2) Last update: 2022/05/12 17:52 (UTC + 2)

The Basque Government has emphasized that the consumption of food of poultry origin is not dangerous, even though these animals are infected with the H5N1 virus.

The Basque Government has today announced that a vulture caught between the foresters of the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa between Azpeitia and Beasain has a highly pathogenic H5N1 virus.

They were taken to the Arizmendi Center in Urnieta for the care of wild animals for evaluation. There he was in contact with three other vultures and infected one of them.

In recent months, after several cases in France, control measures have been tightened in Álava, Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa, including in wetlands and areas where birds congregate.

The Provincial Council and the Basque Government are also carrying out preventive checks to detect infections earlier and prevent possible contamination...

They confirm an outbreak of avian flu in San Martín de la Vega with 20 dead birds
Graciela Díaz Cuervo Saturday, June 11, 2022 Reading time: 2 min

The Community of Madrid has confirmed an avian flu outbreak in the Enrique Tierno Galván park in San Martín de la Vega, which has been closed since the day the first dead ducks and geese were found —on June 2— preventively.

The Central Veterinary Laboratory of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) confirmed yesterday that the cause of death of these animals had been highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) subtype H5N1. In recent months, outbreaks have also been detected in the parks of El Soto in Móstoles and in Polvoranca de Leganés.

At the moment, according to the data provided by the City Council to ZIGZAG, the death of 3 ducks, 14 geese and 3 baby goose in the park has had to be regretted —there is not a total number of species as it is a place of step-. "We have contracted a company to do the monitoring, but we can do nothing but close," they explained, satisfied that the bad situation has not ended up being as catastrophic as they had been initially raised.

Despite the low transmission capacity, the regional government will adopt preventive actions —clinical inspections, serological sampling, etc.— in poultry farms that are less than 10 kilometers from the park, as well as in wild species of the zone. Breeders are recommended to reinforce biosecurity measures, especially those aimed at avoiding contact with wild birds, following in the footsteps of farms such as Ciempozuelos, which confined their animals after the first cases in Madrid.

The Enrique Tierno Galván facilities will remain closed until the Community of Madrid considers that the outbreak is under control. “It is more than a park for San Martín de la Vega and its neighbors, so after a few months it will be just as good again”, the mayor, Rafael Martínez, has responded on his social networks to a neighbor concerned about the problems that has faced this "emblem of the municipality" in the last year.

Bird flu in Escurial: at least one positive and six dead animals
The cases have occurred in a lagoon in the town of Cáceres. It is the sixth municipality to report cases this year.
                  Jose Manuel Cortes

                  Updated August 21, 2022, 13:12

Avian flu returns to the province of Cáceres. This Wednesday the City Council of Escurial received confirmation that at least one of the geese from its Laguna El Pato had tested positive for avian influenza.

In total, there are six dead animals in the same outbreak, although when a positive appears it is no longer necessary to test all the others. The City Council has informed the population in a mobile announcement, reminding the population that the subtype of avian influenza detected, H5N1, has a very low capacity to be transmitted to people. It also cannot be transmitted to humans through cooked poultry, eggs, or processed products derived from them.

Even so, it is recommended to minimize unnecessary contact with dead birds or those showing clinical symptoms related to this virus. The City Council also asks its neighbors to avoid visits to the lagoon and its surroundings and to avoid direct contact with birds.

                  Sixth locality in Extremadura.

During the first quarter of the year, several cases of bird flu were reported in the region. The first, on February 25 in a crane in Santa Marta; four days later, two new cases were detected in geese found in Trujillo. Already in March the same disease was detected in two geese and one heron in Berlanga and in four geese in Torrequemada.

After several months with no detected cases, just a week ago the Board confirmed a case of bird flu in a goose found dead in Mérida.

Confirmed a new case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in a wild bird collected in Bizkaia
                    September 1, 2022
The Basque administration and the poultry sector have reinforced protection measures to prevent the spread of this animal disease to poultry.
The virus mainly affects birds and does not present any risk to people through the consumption of food of poultry origin.

A new case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) H5N1 has been detected in a gannet in poor condition collected by the nursery service of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia on La Arena beach in Muskiz and transferred to the Fauna Recovery Center Silvestre de Gorliz, where samples were taken to detect possible diseases. As a precaution, the gannet was isolated pending laboratory results, turning up dead three days later...

...In the Basque Country, no outbreak of this disease had been detected since 2006, until last May when two positive cases of HPAI H5N1 were confirmed in two griffon vultures that appeared in Matxinbenta and Peñas de Aia, respectively. In the last week of July, a sick gannet found in the vicinity of Donostia was also positive for avian influenza H5N1. With this new case, there would be four outbreaks declared in the Basque Country so far this year.

It is noteworthy that these last two outbreaks have been detected in the same avian species, the gannet, a seabird that does not usually reach our bays and beaches unless it is weakened. In addition, there is no breeding colony of this species in our territory, so it is unlikely that these birds have had contact with other birds before being collected by the forest services of the Provincial Councils...
