The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food informs this March of the detection of a new case of avian influenza in the body of a cigüeña that had been killed in the Palentine Laguna de La Nava, in the town of Fuentes de Nava.

This is a new case that concerns this Community because of the outbreak that was detected during the days in the Abulense municipality of El Oso and that affects wild birds. In Spain, it would be the third case that it has also been detected just as another case on the shore of the Segre River, in the province of Lleida

The avian flu is a typical virus of birds and has its dynamics in the natural medium. In addition, it cannot be transmitted to the man through cooked poultry meat, huevos or processed products derived from them, which is why tranquility is called on this topic from the Board.

The Central Veterinary Laboratory of Algete has confirmed the detection of the High Pathogenic Avian Influenza (IAAP) H5N1 virus in samples recovered from a corpse of a cigüeña (Ciconia ciconia) killed by environmental agents from the Junta in the Laguna de La Nava.

The area of La Nava is classified as a zone of special risk, according to the Order by which specific protection measures were established in relation to the avian influenza, because of which additional measures had been adopted to prevent possible outbreaks of the illness in birds. households due to the epidemiological situation of the illness in Europe.

According to the facilitated information, the hallazgo of the virus in wild birds does not suppose restrictions on the movement of domestic birds and its products. Furthermore, until now there is no evidence that the H5N1 subtype, which has been affecting Europe for the last few months, has a significant zoonotic capacity, so its ability to transmit itself to people is very reduced, but it is also recommended to minimize it. contact with birds that show clinical symptoms or have died in the field.

Since the Ministry has recalled the need to strengthen biosecurity measures in poultry farms, especially those measures aimed at avoiding contact with wild birds, as well as strengthening passive surveillance both in poultry farms and in wild birds, notifying the veterinary services oficiales cualquier sospecha de enfermedad.

      Thursday, 20 January 2022

The Central Veterinary Laboratory of Algete has confirmed the detection of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza virus (HPAI) H5N1 in samples collected from five geese (Anser anser) found dead in the El Bohodón lagoon, in the province of Ávila. This lagoon is very close to the El Oso lagoon, within a radius of 10 km, in which a similar case was detected on January 14.

The area is classified as a special surveillance area so, due to the epidemiological situation of the disease in Europe, additional measures had already been adopted to prevent possible outbreaks of the disease in domestic birds.

This is the fourth outbreak of HPAI H5N1 in wild birds detected in Spain in 2022, after those previously reported in the province of Lérida (on the banks of the Segre river) , in the province of Ávila (in the El Oso lagoon) and in the province of Palencia (in the Nava de Fuentes lagoon). In addition, in domestic birds on January 18, an outbreak of HPAI H5N1 was reported in a turkey fattening farm in the province of Segovia.

New cases of avian influenza in wild birds in the provinces of Ávila and Girona
          02/02/2022

The Central Veterinary Laboratory of Algete has confirmed in recent days four new cases of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in wild birds, three of them in the province of Ávila and one in the province of Girona:

          - Laguna de Donjimeno (Ávila): one greylag goose ( Anser anser ) positive for HPAI H5N1 virus.
          - Laguna de Palacios Rubio (Ávila): a greylag goose ( Anser anser ) positive for HPAI H5N1 virus.
          - Urban center of Hoyo de Pinares (Ávila): one pigeon ( Columba livia ) positive for HPAI H5 virus, without being able to determine the neuraminidase.
          - Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, municipality of Castelló d'Empúries (Girona): a stork ( Ciconia ciconia ) positive for HPAI H5N1 virus. Positive birds for HPAI had also been detected in this wetland in January 2017 and 2021 (in both cases subtype H5N8).

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) recalls that the detection of the HPAI virus in wild birds should not imply any type of movement restriction for birds and their products from the affected areas.

With these new notifications, during the year 2022 a total of eight outbreaks of HPAI H5N1 have been detected in wild birds in Spain (one of them without being able to determine the neuraminidase), as well as an outbreak in domestic birds, specifically a fattening farm of turkeys in the province of Segovia.

The Ministry recalls the need to reinforce biosecurity measures in poultry farms, especially those measures aimed at avoiding contact with wild birds, as well as reinforcing passive surveillance both in poultry farms and in wild birds, notifying the veterinary services. officials any suspicion of illness.
