Russia - As many as 2,500 dead seals found on the coast of Caspian Sea in Dagestan - distemper is one theory/oxygen deprivation is another - positive for bird flu - December 6, 2022 - now denied
A conservation expert estimates the deaths occurred a couple of weeks ago, however the video clearly shows a seal sadly still alive but very ill. Possibly the video was taken a couple of weeks ago.

A top Russian environmental official said Monday that the thousands of dead seals that washed up on Russia's Caspian Sea coast likely died from oxygen deprivation. Officials in the republic of Dagestan, which has a long coastline on the world's largest inland body of water, said this week that 2,500 or more seal corpses have been found recently. Svetlana Radionova of the natural resources watchdog agency Rosprirodnadzor said on Russian state television that hypoxia is being seen as the most likely cause and she said that scientists are investigation whether natural gas emissions in the Caspian could account for low oxygen.

Caspian seal origin, life history, threats and conservation
The Caspian seal is the only marine mammal in the Caspian Sea, and is found no where else in the world. At the start of the 20th century there were around 1 million Caspian seals. It is an iconic animal for the region, and is a key indicator for the health of the Caspian Sea, upon which the livelihoods of thousands of people depend.
Today the population has fallen by more than 90% and continues to decline. The Caspian Sea faces many human pressures and ecological changes, so urgent conservation measures are needed to prevent the disappearance of this key component of the Caspian ecosystem...

The third expedition made by the team at the CSRRC sought to build on the data collected in the previous two expeditions and identify the causes for the continued decline in the Caspian Seal population. The team collected samples from the Caspian Sea and compared these with samples from previous expeditions in order to gain a better understanding of the deterioration of the environment surrounding the Caspian Sea.

The seals that died in the Caspian Sea were infected with bird flu, Dagestan scientists found out
Dead seals found on the Caspian coast turned out to be infected with the bird flu virus, RIA Novosti reports with reference to the press service of the Dagestan State University.
"Preliminary studies of the mass mortality of Caspian seals showed that the animals were infected with avian influenza.
At the same time, it is too early to conclude that it was the virus that caused the death, research is ongoing," said Alimurad Hajiyev, director of the Institute of Ecology and Sustainable Development of DSU.
He noted that in the spring and summer of last year, on one of the main Caspian seal rookeries, Maly Zhemchuzhny Island, a mass death of a wild bird from a highly pathogenic H5N1 strain, which is safe for humans, was recorded.
“We think that this could also happen with the Caspian seal, since there is evidence that there is an outbreak of this strain all over the world. Animals, including marine mammals, are dying from it. Even bears in Alaska are dying from bird flu,” he added. scientist.
Recall
in early December, 2,500 carcasses of the Caspian seal were found on the coast of the Caspian Sea in Dagestan. Initially, various versions of the cause of the mass death were put forward, including oxygen starvation, which could be caused by the release of methane as a result of seismic activity.
The Caspian seal is a unique representative of the true seal family, the only marine mammal in the fauna of the Caspian Sea.
In length reaches 160 centimeters, body weight - up to 100 kilograms. Feeding mainly on fish, the seal is at the top of the food pyramid and has no natural enemies as adults.
As noted in the Ministry of Natural Resources, now the number of Caspian seals is stable: from 270 to 300 thousand individuals.
Dead seals are still being found on the beaches of the Caspian Sea in Dagestan:
