Re: Russia - New pathogenic avian influenza virus in the Primory

There was a story two weeks ago about bird flu in Primorskiy krai in Russia. Now another report of the press conference has been published, and it is clear now that no new outbreak was reported, but the fact that the April outbreak in Vozdvizhenka saw a new variant of the virus, apparently connected with America:

The AI virus mutated at home

In April this year in the village Of Vozdvizhenka, that not far from it was Ussuri, the outbreak of bird influenza was fixed. When studies were conducted, it was revealed that our virus considerably is differed from American. As described the director of the scientific research institute im Ivanovskiy the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences Dmitriy L'vov, bird influenza carried into the Primorskiy Kray migratory birds, supposedly from Vietnam or Laos. - American vaccine was very effective against the bird influenza, but since virus mutated, it can not approach for the virus, discovered in Primorie, says academician Lvov. Migratory birds, which nest on the northeast of the country, can be infected by our virus. They fly to the winter to America, and appears the probability of infecting the American birds by the already new, mutated virus. Moreover if in Primorie the outbreak of disease was already fixed, for sure such flashes will be repeated in the future. Academician Lvov warned American associates about this and were directed by them the models of Primorie virus; therefore in America they can test vaccine.

The connection to America appears to be that 1) they used an American vaccine - which has been outdated by new mutations, 2) they know that their migratory birds carrying this new strain travel to America, and 3) they have told American scientists of this situation and have sent them "models," hopefully sequences, of this new virus.

        .
The sequences are public and are 2.3.2 for HA and 2.3.4 for the other 7 gene segments (all are Fujian). The prior wild bird targets are clade 2.2 (Qinghai).
