    Two new suspected cases of bird flu surface in Romania

    "Samples taken from poultry at the two households are currently being analyzed in a laboratory in Bucharest to determine if they are truly the H5N1 form," said Gabriel Predoi, director of Romania's National Health-Veterinary Agency (ANSV).

    If the H5N1 strain is confirmed in the new cases from the towns of Dunarea and Valea Nucarilor, more than 30,000 birds will have to be slaughtered in the coming days, say authorities. .

    With quarantines in place in affected areas across the country, Romania is one of the European countries most severely hit by bird flu. .

    More than 300,000 chickens on some 11,000 farms have been slaughtered since the country's first case was discovered October 7. ? AFP

    BF in Romania

    The total number of fowl outbreaks in Romania has reached 50

    Agriculture Ministry officials confirmed a new BF outbreak in poultry, in Braila district, 250 Km Northeast of the capital, Bucharest

    EU standard control measures are in place, i.e. 3km-radius culling and 10km-radius quarantine for 3 weeks

    The first case appeared in August 2005, in the Danube Delta region, the largest of Europe?s deltas, hosting over 300 bird species

    All local A/H5N1 HPAI positive samples, have been sent to the EU reference lab in Weybridge (UK) for additional confirmatory tests and genetic banking

    No human cases have been recorded so far
