Barquinha: H5N1 avian flu outbreak closes riverside park (W/AUDIO) - UPDATED
01/11/2022 at 17:41 Share on social networks:

There is a new outbreak of avian influenza detected in the Ribeirinho Park of Vila Nova da Barquinha. According to the information available, the Municipality said that the highly pathogenic H5N1 virus was detected.

The information was released by the Vila Nova da Barquinha City Council this Tuesday, January 11, with appeals to residents not to feed the animals in the riverside park and to avoid approaching them...

...This situation was detected last Saturday, January 8, when some dead ducks were found in the riverside park. According to the mayor of Vila Nova da Barquinha, as soon as these situations were detected, they were immediately reported to the DGAV, not least because the directorate-general is on the ground monitoring the situation related to the outbreak detected at the end of last year in a turkey farm in Limeiras.

The ducks found dead on Saturday were sent to DGAV laboratories, which reported this Tuesday, the 11th, that there is a focus of Avian Influenza there.

Fernando Freire met today with the Municipal Civil Protection and based on these facts, it was decided to ban visits from the entire Ribeirinho Park. This interdiction will be in effect until there is official information to collect it and it will always be the responsibility of the DGAV, which has the technical responsibility for these matters.

As the riverside park is in the village, the mayor made a very serious appeal to all people who have poultry houses or have animals in captivity that confine them in order to avoid contact with wild birds. This virus is very contagious and the confinement of birds is the way to avoid contagion and the increase of these outbreaks of H5N1...

Animal killed with bird flu leads to temporary ban on City Park in Beja
              Agência Lusa , NM

The City Council of Beja closed this Monday the City Park, at least for eight days, after the H5N1 subtype of the highly pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) virus was detected in a dead animal found in space .

In a statement, the municipality informed the population of the detection of this virus “in an animal found dead in Parque da Cidade” and of the decision to interdict the space, in “close and permanent contact with the Directorate-General for Food and Veterinary Medicine (DGAV)”.

“Respecting the hygiene and biosecurity guidelines” determined precisely by the DGAV, the municipality “decided to ban the City Park from the public, with immediate effect, for a period of not less than eight days”, the statement reads.

On 17 August, the Municipality of Beja revealed that it would file a complaint against unknown persons in the Public Ministry (MP) due to the death of at least four geese in Parque da Cidade, claiming at the time that it suspected that they might have been poisoned...
