LISBON, Feb. 21 (Xinhuanet) -- Portuguese breeders have been ordered to report numbers of poultry they own and keep them indoors to avoid contact with wild birds, Portugal's Agriculture Minister Jaime Silva said on Tuesday.

Silva said wild birds are currently making their seasonal migration in Europe, and an increasing number of European countries are affected by bird flu virus, so it is a must to confine poultry indoors.

Silva expressed his concern over a recent 15 percent drop of poultry sales in the country and assured the consumers that bird flu cannot be contracted from eating properly cooked chicken or eggs.

He also noted that up till now suspected dead birds found in Portugal have all been tested negative for bird flu.

The authorities have made test on 1,101 fowls across the country so far this year. Last year, the total number of tested poultry was 1,600.
