Avian flu in the Człuchów poviat
    2022-01-13 | Przechlewo, Człuchów

Some of the dead birds picked up from the Brda River in the Przechlewo commune suffered from bird flu. The poviat veterinarian confirmed the results of the research and announced that the entire Człuchów poviat would be covered by the endangered area. According to ecologists, the constantly increasing number of dead birds in Pomerania is not only the result of the H5 N1 virus.

Witnesses alerted about the large number of dead swans in the vicinity of Przechlewo, who, with horror, discovered a dead flock on the Brda River. The employees of the poviat veterinary inspectorate in Człuchów immediately began to act. With the help of firefighters in the section from Przechlewo to Sępolno, 43 dead swans were found and sent to the laboratory, where it was shown that some swans suffered from avian flu.

Over the next few days, the entire Człuchów poviat will be included in the endangered area. For farmers and poultry farmers, this means keeping farms strictly confined to keep the animals from coming into contact with wild birds. Currently, dead birds found in the Pucki and Nowodworski poviats are also examined. Dead birds were found again in Puck Bay. For environmentalists who have been sounding the alarm for many years about the growing unexplained cases of dead swans at this site, this is worrying.

Ecologists from the association "Our Earth" recall with horror what happened last year in the vicinity of Władysławowo, where almost a thousand dead birds were found, only some of them suffered from the H5N1 virus.

Ecologists are convinced that the poor condition of the environment is related to the discharge of salt minerals into the waters of the Puck Bay. The H5N1 virus, commonly known as bird flu, first appeared in Poland in 2007. Despite the efforts of the Ministry of Agriculture, the virus spreads to private farms every year.

Bird flu in the Opole region. We have a second outbreak of infectious disease. This time near Nysa
                      Christopher Strauchmann
                      Krzysztof Strauchmann January 4, 2023, 14:19

A swan found on December 30 in a river near Nysa was sick with bird flu, caused by the H5N1 virus. For the time being, however, the veterinary inspection has not designated an infected area there.

We have the results of research from the National Veterinary Institute in Puławy. The DNA of the H5N1 virus was confirmed in the swan found in Nysa Kłodzka. However, the mallard duck found then also died, it was "clean" - informs the district veterinarian in Nysa Zenon Ziubrzyński.

On December 29, 3 dead swans were found in the bushes on the banks of Nysa Kłodzka in the area of Aleja Wojska Polskiego in Nysa. Since foxes had already gotten to the remains, none of the birds were suitable for laboratory testing. At the request of state veterinary inspectors, firefighters searched the Nysa riverbed below the city the next day and found another dead swan. He was diagnosed with bird flu. In the area of the Nysa and Otmuchów reservoirs in the Nysa district, there are currently thousands of birds on their winter migrations.

                      - After consulting the provincial doctor, we did not decide to establish protection zones and restrictions in force therein, including perlustration of farms - says Dr. Zenon Ziubrzyński. – However, with the help of firefighters and police officers, we will search the water's edge. The found remains of birds will be utilized, and if they are suitable - we will send them for further research on H5N1. We are constantly monitoring the situation, we will see how it develops.

The veterinary inspection will notify the local self-government authorities, anglers and Waters of Poland about the risk of avian influenza. There are no large poultry farms nearby. Small farmers are asked not to let the birds out of their henhouses. They should be fed and watered indoors at all times, out of contact with wild birds. The breeders themselves should follow the principles of biosecurity as closely as possible. Avian influenza does not spread to humans, but it causes huge economic losses.

On December 7, 2022, the State Veterinary Inspection confirmed an outbreak of pathogenic avian flu in Poland in the village of Fałkowice in the commune of Pokoje, on a breeding farm where over 200,000 laying hens had to be slaughtered.

The outbreak of bird flu was located in Silesia. The health department warns the inhabitants of seven towns and states which birds are responsible for the infection. Unfortunately, the area of bird flu infection is expanding. Cities will have to put up warning signs.

                            Bird flu in Silesia

Upper Silesia was attacked by bird flu. An outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) of the H5N1 subtype was found in wild birds in the Bieruńsko-Lędziński district, precisely in the vicinity of the Dziećkowice water reservoir. According to the sanitary services, seagulls are responsible for spreading the plague.

The Silesian Voivode issued a regulation regarding the zone covered by avian flu, in which there are currently 7 towns. Unfortunately, everything indicates that the plague zone can expand quickly, because seagulls migrate and can infect further populations of birds of other species...

The National Veterinary Institute has confirmed that the samples taken for testing from dead birds in the Łężczok Reserve and the Buków Polder - Stary Roszków contain H5N1 avian influenza virus.

Tomorrow (April 26), Voivode Jarosław Wieczorek will issue a regulation on combating highly pathogenic avian influenza in the Racibórz poviat and partially in neighboring poviats. This is the result of the confirmation by the National Veterinary Institute that the samples taken for testing from dead birds in the Łężczok Reserve and the Buków Polder - Stary Roszków contain the H5N1 avian influenza virus. After receiving the results, the Silesian Voivode immediately convened a crisis team, where it was decided, among others, about a temporary ban on visitors to the Łężczok Reserve and the Buków Polder.

According to Alina Kucharzewska, spokesperson for the Silesian Voivode, on Wednesday (April 26) Jarosław Wieczorek, the Voivode, will issue a regulation on combating highly pathogenic avian influenza in the area of the Łężczok Reserve and the Buków Polder. The regulation will include all obligations and prohibitions resulting from the threat of avian flu.

In recent days, veterinary services together with foresters of the State Forests have been constantly monitoring the area of the Łężczok Reserve and the Buków Polder, where dead wild birds (black-headed gulls) have appeared. In the collected samples, the National Veterinary Institute identified the highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza virus. After receiving the results of the tests, the Silesian Voivode immediately convened the Voivodeship Crisis Staff, which decided, among others, about a temporary ban on visitors to the Łężczok Reserve and the Buków Polder.

The first information about dead birds in the Łężczok Reserve was received by the Poviat Veterinary Officer in Racibórz on April 18. Then it turned out that the corpses of seagulls are also in the Beech Polder. The regulation of the voivode will indicate the threatened area to which the restrictions will apply.
