Bird flu is taking its toll in the Opole region. More than 800 wild birds died
          2023-05-10, 22:10 Author: Katarzyna Doros-Stachoń

There are currently 11 outbreaks of pathogenic avian influenza in the Opole region. According to the Provincial Veterinary Inspectorate in Opole, the H5N1 virus affects only wild birds, specifically black-headed gulls, which brought the disease from south-eastern Europe.

          - It is over 800 pieces of dead birds. These sick birds migrated to our province and not only here. And unfortunately, we are still struggling with this phenomenon all the time. On May 9, 20 pieces of dead adult seagulls and 20 chicks were found again on Lake Duże - says Agnieszka Kobierska, deputy of the Opole provincial veterinarian....

Bird flu near Łomża. H5N1 was detected in the commune of Piątnica
              16/05/2023 10:28

Five dead black-headed gulls were found to have cases of H5N1 avian influenza. Piątnica and Łomża were in the endangered area.

In the Narew valley, between Piątnica and Łomża, there are several dozen nests of this species. Cases of avian influenza of the H5N1 subtype were found in five dead animals.

The city of Łomża and the villages of Piątnica Włościańska and Piątnica Poduchowna will now be in the infected area. This will result in restrictions for poultry farmers. This includes closing poultry, securing feed and water against access by animals from the outside and the use of protective measures (including disinfecting mats) by persons having access to animals on farms. It will also not be possible to bring animals into and out of the farm, introduce wild birds to hunting grounds and organize hunting. Pigeon breeders will not be subject to restrictions.

An outbreak of avian flu has been confirmed in Drogania near Myślenice
                Katarzyna Hołuj May 16, 2023, 11:49

The results of tests carried out in the reference laboratory in Puławy confirmed that two terns found in Drogania (Myślenice commune) on the shore of the Dobczyce Reservoir were infected with the H5N1 avian influenza virus. Veterinary services have been conducting a perlustration of both the shores of the Reservoir and the surrounding poultry farms and farms breeding poultry for several days.

On Monday (May 15) in the afternoon we received the test results from the laboratory in Puławy. They show that the birds were infected with the virus of the bird group H5N1, which is virulent for poultry - says Krzysztof Giza, district veterinarian in Myślenice.

Dead terns on the banks of the Dobczyce Reservoir

Let us remind you that after receiving a notification from one of the residents who observed three dead birds over the Dobczyce Reservoir, on Wednesday (May 10), PIW inspectors went to the place indicated in the notification and found two dead river terns on the shore. They secured them and on the same day they were taken to the Veterinary Hygiene Department in Krakow, where an autopsy and toxicological examination were carried out. Next, the corpses were sent to the laboratory in Krosno, and when the result from there turned out to be positive, they were sent for testing in the reference laboratory in Puławy.

The Poviat Veterinary Inspectorate in Myślenice checked the shores of the Dobczyce Reservoir already on Friday, when the results of laboratory tests from Krosno were known.
Inspectors found one dead heron. They secured it and disinfected the place. The bird went to the laboratory in Krosno, where the information about the negative test result has already returned.

                Inspectors check farms and farms

Since Friday, we have been conducting a perlustration of poultry farms within a radius of 10 km from the place where the birds were found on the reservoir in Drogania. We are also starting inspections on poultry farms. The point is that breeders should comply with the principles of biosecurity, i.e. keep birds in confinement so that they do not come into contact with wild birds, and also that feed and water for drinking poultry do not come into contact with wild birds. The H5N1 virus is highly pathogenic to poultry, and failure to comply with these rules may result in losses for farmers, says Krzysztof Giza.

                And adds:

We are conducting inspections now to gain time, but at the same time, let's designate zones on the basis of which the voivode will soon issue an ordinance on combating avian flu in this area, and it will be an area covering not only part of the Myślenice poviat, but also touching the Wieliczka poviat and Krakow.

Deputy of the Małopolska Voivodship Veterinary Doctor

Dead birds are still found in the Łężczok reserve. Hundreds of black-headed gulls have already died there

Marcin Fischer, the forest inspector of the Rudy Raciborskie Forest Inspectorate, tells News about this . It reassures, however, that these are trace numbers of birds. "The situation is clearing up," he says.

Bird flu , which was found in the Buków polder in the Roszków area and the Łężczok reserve in the Nędza commune, killed hundreds of birds. In the first location, these were trace numbers compared to the second, as told Nowinom by the doctor. vet. Konrad Kuczera , deputy of the Silesian Provincial Veterinary Officer.

Shortly after the National Veterinary Institute - National Research Institute in Puławy identified avian influenza of the H5N1 subtype in samples taken by the District Veterinary Officer in Racibórz, Voivode Jarosław Wieczorek introduced an appropriate order to prevent the spread of this disease. He also decided to close Łężczok and the Buków polder, i.e. outbreaks of the disease, for tourists. The changes were in effect until May 25. On the last day of restrictions, Konrad Kuczera told us that about 3,000 birds died in total. He also indicated that ornithologists estimated that about 2.5 thousand breeding pairs of black-headed gulls, i.e. about 5 thousand birds, nested in the Łężczok reserve. So the disease took over half of them.

On May 26, Linda Hofman , spokeswoman for PGW Wody Polskie in Gliwice, admitted in an interview with Nowiny that there are no more mass deaths of birds in the Buków polder, and if they do, they are isolated cases. "In principle, we can say that this phenomenon has ceased at this location," she explained.

The situation was different in Łężczok. Roman Suska , spokesman for the Ruda forest district, calculated that 76 birds were collected on the last day of the restrictions. And deaths are still recorded there, but there are fewer and fewer of them, as the forest inspector Marcin Fischer tells us . - This is due to the fact that the culmination of the breeding season for the black-headed gull has already stopped, the population has been depleted by the virus itself. It all boils down to the fact that there are fewer and fewer of these birds, and thus the number of deaths is also lower, but they are still there - he points out.

Marcin Fischer explains that birds from the area under the supervision of the forest inspectorate are collected as needed, which is helped by the Racibórz fire brigade. - You can enter Łężczok. All these decisions were consulted with the Poviat Veterinary Officer and the area is open to visitors - he emphasizes. And about what to do when you come across a dead bird, we wrote HERE.

The forest inspector admits that the disease has wreaked great havoc in this area. "There are thousands of dead birds," he says. This is also the most difficult situation that Marcin Fischer had to face after he took over the management of the Ruda Forest District. - In Łężczok there are rarely cases like this, when so many individuals of a given population, of a given species die - he concludes.

Bird flu in a swimming area in the province Lublin? Water out of service in two places

Water in two out of 26 examined lakes, lagoons and ponds in the Lubelskie Voivodeship is unsuitable for bathing. One swimming area was closed due to avian flu.

This year, the organizers reported the functioning of 34 bathing sites and 4 places occasionally used for bathing in the Lubelskie Voivodship.

                                – The water in these places is regularly monitored by the Sanitary Inspection for the occurrence of exceedances of microbiological contamination, such as Escherichia coli and enterococci, and the presence of blue-green algae blooms, macro-algae, marine phytoplankton or other pollutants, such as tar materials, glass, plastics, rubber and other waste that cannot be immediately removed from the water - said Agnieszka Dados, spokeswoman for the Provincial Sanitary and Epidemiological Station in Lublin.

The inspection examined the water in all 26 reported bathing sites that have already started the season, of which water was found unsuitable for bathing in two: Moczydło in Nielisz and Ponds "Echo" in Zwierzyniec . On the other hand, the swimming area Glinianki in Chełm, despite good water quality, was classified as unsuitable for bathing.

                                – This decision was made by the bathing organizer on the basis of the regulation introduced by the Poviat Veterinary Inspector in Chełm of June 14, 2023, regarding the fight against highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in wild birds in the Chełm poviat – she reported .

In the remaining 10 bathing areas and 2 places occasionally used for bathing, which reported the start of the season on July 1, tests will be carried out in the coming days.
