Hundreds of bonfires with millions of birds in them: a tragic balance sheet for 2021
                        01/10/2022
                        Dorota Kolasińska

The past year was not kind to poultry farmers - poor purchase prices, lower than usual demand for poultry, high costs of feed and other means of production, and the plague lurking everywhere in the country, destroying the achievements of generations of poultry farmers. The summary of bird flu in 2021 will not be in colorful colors.

According to the data of the Chief Veterinary Inspection, 403 outbreaks of avian influenza were identified in Poland in 2021. At the beginning of 2021, the H5N8 virus was raging on farms, the latest outbreaks - since November 2021, it has been caused by the highly pathogenic H5N1 virus. Last year, poultry farmers breathed a sigh of relief for only three months, because there were no outbreaks only from August to November. Nobody had the time to be pleased with the regaining of the status of a country free from avian influenza even for a moment, because shortly after the decision, in November, the news of another wave of disease outbreaks on farms broke. The virus, experts and veterinarians emphasized, was still present in the wild in wild birds. With the beginning of the autumn migrations, the virus spread throughout the country. And the effect is tragic. In the last days of December 2021, breeders also had no peace in their herds, four more outbreaks were designated, closing the year with 403 outbreaks.

Fireplace no. 400 (December 30, 2021) - farm farming of 50 different species of poultry, province Dolnośląskie Voivodeship, Milicz poviat, town of Koruszka

Fireplace no. 401 (December 30, 2021) - commercial farm 19 676 slaughter turkeys, province. Lower Silesia, Średzki poviat, Szczepanów town

Fireplace no. 402 (December 30, 2021) - commercial farm 28 850 for slaughter ducks, province. Greater Poland, Ostrów County, Strzyżew Town

Fireplace no. 403 (December 31, 2021) - commercial farm of 669 different species, province. Lodzkie, Wieruszów poviat, Dzietrzkowice town

In 2021, only in designated outbreaks, farmers lost 14,234,735 poultry. However, there were many more birds subjected to disposal, as the procedures required the elimination of flocks in close proximity. The balance is terrible and, unfortunately, historically high.

However, this is not the end - in 2022, four more outbreaks appeared, also caused by the H5N1 virus. This time in Mazovia, Greater Poland and the province. Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship.

Fireplace no. 1/2022 (02/01/2022) commercial farm 40 910 slaughter turkeys, voiv. Mazowieckie, Łosice poviat, Nowosielec town

Fireplace no. 2/2022 (02/01/2022) commercial farm 11,946 breeding ducks voiv. Greater Poland, Ostrzeszów poviat, town of Giżyce

Fireplace no. 3/2022 (01/06/2022) commercial farm 1,829 breeding geese voiv. Kujawsko-Pomorskie, Tuchola poviat, city of Pamiętowo / Kęsowo

Bonfire No. 4/2022 (January 5, 2022) commercial farm 41 141 slaughter turkeys, province. Mazowieckie, Łosice poviat, Nowosielec town
Situation in the EU regarding avian influenza

The GVI report shows that the virus in 2021 took a heavy toll not only in Poland. The greatest number of outbreaks was identified in France, as many as 469, in Italy 296 and Germany 252. The situation is also not interesting in Hungary, Lithuania and the Czech Republic. In total, 1,691 outbreaks were identified in the EU in 2021.

The new year saw 10 more outbreaks in France, 7 in Hungary and 4 in Poland.

Avian flu in the Ostrzeszów poviat
                            MM 2022-01-21

The H5N1 virus attacked farms in the south of the province. Six new outbreaks of bird flu were found: two in Grabów-Pustków (30,000 ducks and 7,000 ducks), Kaliszkowice Ołobocki (7,000 ducks), Palaty (20,000 ducks), and Giżyce (12,500 ducks). ducks), in Kaliszkowice Kaliski (16,000 broilers and 7,000 ducks).

Upon receipt of the results, the birds were immediately euthanized - in a humane manner, with the use of specialized equipment, under full control of carbon dioxide concentration. On the other hand, the henhouses were disinfected and quarantined. After 30 days, they will be checked again - informs the District Veterinary Doctor Krzysztof Lamek.

Due to the increased risk, the Poviat Veterinary Inspectorate in Ostrzeszów is expanded by five new employees.

The main task is to avoid the transmission of the disease to humans, as well as its mutation. Therefore, for this purpose, sick herds are eliminated and the principle of biosecurity is strictly applied.

All species of birds are susceptible to infection with this deadly virus - from wild and free-living to farmed birds.

Sanepid appeals to all poultry farmers in the Ostrzeszów region to exercise extreme caution, limit contact between wild birds and poultry to a minimum, use protective clothing on the farm, protect feed against access to wild animals and not to feed poultry outside the building where poultry is kept .
