NL: Bird flu diagnosed in Blija

The Hague (aho) - In Blija (municipality of Noardeast-Fryslân, province of Friesland) in the Netherlands, bird flu (H5) was diagnosed in broilers. It is probably a highly pathogenic virus. To prevent it from spreading, the around 177,000 broiler chickens on this farm are slaughtered. A poultry farm owned by the same owner is 100 meters from the infected farm. This farm with around 45,000 broilers is culled preventively. The culls are carried out by the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA).

In Minnertsga, 105,000 chicks are slaughtered because of avian flu

In the Frisian town of Minnertsga, 105,000 broilers must be killed because the company has been diagnosed with bird flu, reports the Ministry of Agriculture. Two other businesses three kilometers away are being examined for the disease to determine if it is also present there.

Ten other poultry farms located further away from the broiler farm are no longer authorized to transport animals for the moment and in the immediate future. The ban on companies within ten kilometers also applies to the transport of hatching and table eggs if there are birds on the same site.

Avian flu has been raging in our country for months. Since October of last year, therefore, there has been an obligation to keep birds with commercial poultry farmers. The government is trying to prevent the spread of the bird flu virus with the preventive slaughter of poultry and the introduction of a confinement obligation and a transport ban.

Minister Henk Staghouwer for Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality said the new outbreak of bird flu in the Netherlands reason to reconsider the poultry density of the Gelderse Vallei . By far, most Dutch poultry farmers are found in this area.

Bird flu diagnosed at poultry farm in Minnertsga

                          News item | 26-07-2022 | 20:41

Bird flu was diagnosed at a broiler farm in Minnertsga (municipality of Waadhoeke, province of Friesland). It is probably a highly pathogenic variant. To prevent the virus from spreading, the approximately 105,000 broilers at the location are culled by the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA).

There are no other poultry farms in the 1 kilometer zone around the infected farm. There are 2 other broiler farms of the same owner, but with separate operations, in the 3 kilometer zone around the infected farm. These companies will be screened for bird flu by the NVWA. In addition, these companies will be intensively monitored over the next 14 days for symptoms of disease that may indicate bird flu.

There are 10 other poultry farms in the 10 kilometer zone to which the transport ban applies immediately.
