Hundreds of dead knots washed up on Schiermonnikoog beach
    Fri, December 17, 2021 5.30 pm

SCHIERMONNIKOOG - Hundreds of dead knots washed ashore on the beach of Schiermonnikoog in recent days. The suspected cause of this is bird flu variant H5N1. This variant is highly pathogenic and untreatable. A few live specimens were brought to the Faunavisie Foundation by animal ambulances and private individuals. All but one of the birds had to be euthanized.

For research, 26 dead knots, a curlew and an oystercatcher have been collected. These birds are brought to the Dutch Wildlife Health in Utrecht. Blood tests will have to show whether it actually concerns bird flu. Faunavisie says that the birds are not doing well at the moment. Global warming, pollution and bird flu have cut the world population in half. Faunavisie tries to keep some older birds – with mild symptoms – alive with sodium chloride, vitamin B, painkillers and anti-inflammatories.

Bird flu detected in dead knots washed up on the Wadden Sea
By Addrew Shawn On Dec 28, 2021

On 17 and 18 December 2021, a few hundred dead knots (Calidris canutus) were discovered on Schiermonnikoog and in Oost-Groningen. At the behest of the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority, Wageningen Bioveterinary Research (WBVR) examined a few dead knots, an oystercatcher, and a curlew who were found in the same location. The avian influenza H5N1 virus was detected in the birds examined. It is suspected to be the highly pathogenic variant, but this is under further investigation.

Most of the dead birds were found along the shoreline...
