    Bird flu in Bruchem

    News item | 13-03-2014

In Bruchum a holding of more than 10,000 laying hens bird flu (avian influenza, AI) has been confirmed. This farm has free range poultry. It is probably the mild H5 variant.

Because a low pathogenic (mild) H5 variant can mutate into a highly pathogenic (highly contagious and deadly for chickens) variant, the company is cleared by both a low and a high pathogenic variant. This is based on European rules. The culling is carried out by the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA).

    measures
As of Thursday, March 13th, 2014 at 17:00 pm there is a transportban in an area of over one kilometer around the company Bruchum for transporting poultry, eggs, poultry manure and used bedding. This prohibition basically is for 21 days. Within this area there are eight other poultry farms. These companies will be sampled and tested for bird flu.
