  • Italy - Bird flu, outbreak in Verona province

Avian flu is once again affecting farms in the Veronese area, and it did it in the worst way. On Sunday, the national and European reference center for the disease, which is based at the Istituto zooprofilattico delle Venezie, in Legnaro (Padua) - communicated that an outbreak of contagion was discovered in Vigasio in the Veronese area, the third in less than a month .

This time the bird flu manifested itself in a structure with significant numbers. In fact, due to the confirmation of the presence of the disease, 916,000 laying hens will have to be killed. The felling operations will be complex, given the number of birds. Their launch was already scheduled for today.

The elimination of animals in the structures where the virus infiltrates is one of the means by which we try to prevent it from spreading throughout the territory. The others are based on the adoption of special measures aimed at containing the risks of further infections, which are mainly based on bans on the movement of animals, on the suspension of trade fairs where birds may be present and on the adoption of initiatives to avoid contact between farmed and wild animals.

According to Zooprophylactic data and the news provided by the public medicine veterinary union Sivemp, the one attested in Vigasio is the fourth outbreak of avian flu of the H5N1 type whose presence in Northern Italy has been verified in less than a month. On 7 March the virus was discovered in a broiler turkey farm in Sorgà, as part of the usual checks carried out before sending the animals to slaughter. Approximately 10,200 male broiler turkeys were present on the farm at the time of confirmation. On 16 March, another positivity emerged in a facility for meat turkeys in the province of Forlì-Cesena, while on 29 March there was new confirmation in a farm of laying hens in an aviary in Nogarole Rocca where there were around 85,000 animals, including hens and pullets.
