      2022 – H5N1

On 22 September 2022, the National Reference Laboratory (NRL) for Avian Influenza and Newcastle Disease confirmed the first positivity in the second semester 2022 for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) virus subtype H5N1 in poultry. General and specific control measures in the protection and surveillance zones have been implemented in compliance with the European legislation (Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2020/687). Duration of these measures, if available, are reported in the document “Outbreaks”.

On 29 September 2022, the NRL confirmed the positivity to the HPAI virus of subtype H5N1 in wild birds. The detail on wild bird species involved in the outbreaks is reported in the document “Positive HPAI cases in wild birds”.

A new outbreak of avian flu in the Lower Padua area, high alert on farms

                              November 14, 2023 at 08:48

A year later the nightmare returns and the memory goes to the horrible months of autumn 2021, when in the Veneto the epidemic cost 14 million animals culled and half a billion euros wasted for farmers in the area. In the past few hours the health authority has detected an outbreak of avian influenza on a farm in the Lower Padua area: a farm with a few hundred turkeys, which in the space of 2-3 days saw at least 300 animals suddenly die.
                              The case in Sant'Urbano

Unfortunately, the farmers are well educated - given the experiences of recent years - and the fear that it could be avian influenza quickly became apparent. The tests conducted by Local Health Authority 6 Euganea and the Tre Venezie Zooprophylactic Institute confirmed: the highly pathogenic virus has returned to the Sant'Urbano farm, in the Carmignano area. Turkeys that have not already died from the new wave of flu will be slaughtered at this time. In fact, it should be remembered that the strict safety and prevention protocol linked to this virus requires that, even in the presence of just one infected animal, the entire animal population of the company is killed and disposed of. The outbreak also triggers a surveillance perimeter which also forces other neighboring farms to raise their security mechanisms.
