  • Italy- Ronco All'Adige, outbreak of avian flu in a farm of 13,000 turkeys (H5N1)

Other species also suffer from viruses. A turkey farm in Ronco all'Adige has just been hit by an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza caused by the H5N1 virus. The disease has killed 200 animals out of 13 thousand, but the survivors will also be killed and the carcasses burned. The confirmation took place last Monday, and so far there are no warning signs in nearby farms. Health authorities are confident that this is an isolated case, but attention is high because the avian experienced a record season last winter, especially in northern Europe. Also this autumn there are signs of a sustained circulation from Asia to the Mediterranean.

The owners of the Ronco kennel became suspicious in recent days and asked for the intervention of the veterinary service. The Zooprophylactic Institute of the Venezie has confirmed infection with the H5N1 virus, which is very contagious for animals, but not so much for humans. Infections in our species are infrequent, but not impossible: in China and Russia in recent months two farmers have fallen ill. The cases are treated very severely, both from an epidemiological point of view because they do not cause outbreaks, and from a medical point of view, because the disease can be serious.

Ronco's case is not the first of the year in Italy. East of Ferrara on 14 and 15 October another outbreak was certified by the zooprophylactic of the Venezie, but this time with a low pathogenic virus, less serious. Despite this, 38 thousand turkeys were killed in the Codigoro farm. In recent days, the Ministry of Health has issued an ordinance which invites the utmost attention. 'Also in the summer of 2021 - explains the Veneto public veterinarians union - highly pathogenic avian viruses were detected in poultry and various species of wild birds in areas of Russia connected to the main migration areas of wild water birds. towards European wintering sites '.

A second outbreak was discovered in Ronco d'Adige

Venice, 27 October 2021 - The regional machine is activated to prevent the outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza that broke out in a farm in the Municipality of Ronco d'Adige, province of Verona, from spreading. More than 13,000 turkeys to be killed. The President of the Region, Luca Zaia, has in fact ordered the activation of the restrictive measures provided, including the activation of a protection zone with a radius of three kilometers from the site of the outbreak and the activation of a surveillance zone with a surveillance radius of 10 kilometers.
      The containment measures

Specifically, in the protection zone it is foreseen that poultry and birds are kept indoors or, if this is not possible, in a place where they cannot come into contact with birds from other farms. The carcasses of dead animals must be destroyed immediately and vehicles must be disinfected. The entry and exit of captive birds and domestic mammals are not allowed, except those that have access exclusively to spaces reserved for human habitation. Any increases in morbidity or mortality or significant decreases in production levels on holdings are immediately reported to the official veterinarian and the keeper of the animals must keep a record of all farm visitors.
      Second outbreak in Ronco Adige

The spreading of droppings and the introduction and release of game of sensitive species are prohibited. But it is also not possible to move birds, eggs or carcasses between farms, as well as the transport of poultry meat from slaughterhouses, cutting plants and cold stores, with a number of exceptions. Finally, fairs and exhibitions of poultry and other birds are prohibited. Substantially similar measures are envisaged for the surveillance zone. However, at the moment a second outbreak has been discovered in another farm in Ronco d'Adige.

Bird flu alert, outbreaks are spreading: now six farms are affected

There are currently six farms affected by avian flu. After the first two farms in Ronco dell'Adige, as reported by Prima Verona, for a total of 24 thousand turkeys, now the flu virus (H5N1) has reached another center in Ronco and one inside a structure located in San Bonifacio. And now a cluster has been identified in Nogara.
        Bird flu, six farms affected

Less than a week after the first, on 26 October 2021 a new outbreak of avian was recorded in a farm in Ronco all'Adige consisting of 11 thousand beef turkeys. Now the outbreaks of avian flu in the province of Verona are spreading.

The last, in chronological order, to have been identified, as reported by Prima Verona, is in a farm in Nogara: Today, Wednesday 3 November 2021, the highly pathogenic H5N1 subtype influenza virus was identified inside a farm in Nogara . The veterinary services of Ulss 9 Scaligera have already taken steps to apply all the containment measures provided for by the law, including the killing of animals on farms. The Municipality of Nogara itself, through the Facebook page, shared suggestions to prevent the virus (which we remember is harmless to humans) from spreading among farms.

Farm affected by avian flu in Angiari, ten outbreaks in the Verona area

There are ten outbreaks of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza confirmed in the province of Verona. The cases concern ten farms in four Scaliger municipalities and more than 200,000 chickens and turkeys. The account was kept by the Venetian section of Sivemp, the veterinary union.

The municipality that has the most cases at the moment is that of Ronco all'Adige, where the first cases of contagion by a particularly aggressive virus have been discovered, but which fortunately only affects poultry species. Five farms in Ronco were affected, four of turkeys and one of broilers. And after the first outbreak, two more have been added to San Bonifacio, where only turkey farms are involved. The other Scaliger areas affected by avian flu are those of Nogara and Angiari. And also in these territories the animals involved are turkeys.

Avian flu in Veneto: 20 outbreaks in the Verona area

The alarm for avian flu does not stop in Veneto, where, according to the regional Copagri, the subtype H5N1 virus has hit numerous farms in the Verona area, an area in which there are now about twenty outbreaks, with several hundreds of thousands of interested leaders. This despite the fact that at the moment, the agricultural confederation reports, the situation appears relatively under control. 'We consider it essential, given the aggressiveness and danger of the virus, - underlines the president of Copagri Veneto Carlo Giulietti - to focus all the attention of the case on the need to strictly adhere to the biosecurity measures indicated by the competent authorities'. The virus affects only poultry species. Ā«In addition to reporting any suspicious symptoms - continues Giulietti -, we invite all poultry farms to respect the protocols identified to avoid the risk of indirect infections; therefore pay attention to the disinfection of trucks, at the entrance and exit of the company, and the use of dedicated shoes and clothing, avoiding direct contact between wild birds and poultry and limiting external visits to the farm '.

              In 25 days 28 outbreaks

In fact, cases of contagion continue to emerge in the Verona area located east of the Brenner motorway and south of the Milan-Venice. An area where there is a very high concentration of poultry plants. The latest cases still occurred in the eastern area that goes from Arcole to San Bonifacio and in the area of ā€‹ā€‹San Pietro di Morubio. The epidemiological situation certified by the Zooprophylactic, which is the most recent to have the official chrism, says that three cases were ascertained on Thursday, two in beef turkey farms, with, respectively, 12,640 and 11,500 heads, and one in one structure in which there were 158,500 quail. Two outbreaks had been verified the day before, in a plant with 32,000 turkeys and in a farm where there were 15 turkeys. Three, however, were infected on Tuesday. In one there were 7,800 turkeys, in another 102,500 broilers and in the third 4,000 birds of various species. Up to last Thursday, the elimination of nearly one million animals had been carried out. Of 979.558, to be precise. On the other hand, the killing of the birds present in the breeding sites of the outbreak is one of the measures implemented for some time to counter the spread of the disease.

Bird flu alert, outbreaks rise to 60

The outbreaks of HPAI avian influenza registered in the province of Verona have increased to 60 and mainly involve turkey farms. It is the Sivemp Veneto (Italian union of veterinary public medicine) that made known the epidemiological evolution of the disease.

The Ministry of Health has issued a new note regarding the HPAI avian influenza outbreaks confirmed in recent days by the National Reference Center for Avian Influenza at the IZS delle Venezie on samples taken in poultry farms.

Bird flu, over 3 million animals killed

The spread of avian flu in Verona and the rest of Italy is causing concern. Non-health concern, because the virus is not transmitted to humans and therefore is lethal only in poultry animals, whether wild or farmed, such as chickens, hens or turkeys. But precisely because it mainly affects farms, avian flu generates more and more important problems of an economic and also environmental nature.

The Tre Venezie Zooprophylactic Institute updated the number of outbreaks in Italy last Wednesday, November 24th. Up to now 82 farms have been affected, of which 73 in the province of Verona and the remaining 9 scattered across the provinces of Rome, Padua, Brescia and Mantua. And at the moment the animals killed exceed 3 million. A huge number, which forced the Ulss 9 Scaligera to grant an exception to the regulation, allowing the burying of hundreds of thousands of carcasses. 'It is necessary to monitor that this takes place exclusively in suitable sites, as prescribed by the health company, because we are in an area full of springs. To solve an emergency we cannot create another one. It would have been better to proceed with the incineration, ā€¯declared two regional councilors of the Democratic Party, Anna Maria Bigon and Andrea Zanoni.
'Burying such a mass of carcasses could create leaching problems, with the release of contaminants in the aquifers - explained the two Venetian councilors - The derogation is risky, so we ask the councilor for the environment to activate the Arpav, so as to put in the field, actions to monitor and control the soil and especially the aquifers. The main way is to deliver the carcasses to authorized facilities for disposal by incineration which, among other things, guarantee total safety on the elimination of viruses '.

L'Ulss 9 Scaligera ha dovuto concedere una deroga al regolamento, consentendo l'interramento di centinaia di migliaia di carcasse. Il PD chiede di sorvegliare sul rischio percolamento

Avian flu In the Veronese area exceeded 100

The cases of avian flu infection in the Verona area have exceeded one hundred. The ongoing epizootic, which continues to be mainly concentrated in the Veronese plain, is much worse than the one that occurred in various regions of Italy between 2016 and 2018 (it had caused a total of about 85 outbreaks) and is starting, unfortunately, to remember the epidemics that occurred at the turn of the millennium which led to the elimination of millions of animals. In fact, to try to stop the spread of the virus, the first thing that is done is to empty the farms in which it occurs. A fact that, together with the mortality of animals and the halt of poultry activities, inevitably ends up being the source of enormous economic damage. Given that avian is not transmitted to humans (it is not in fact a public health problem), it must be said that the update of the progress of the epidemic published last Friday, on data updated the day before, by the Zooprophylactic Institute experimentale delle Venezie, the national reference center for the disease, confirms the constant, and numerically significant, spread of the virus. The avian was discovered for the first time in Ronco on 19 October and then, in five and a half weeks, it affected 102 farms.

I casi di contagio di influenza aviaria nel Veronese hanno superato quota cento. L’epizoozia in atto, che continua a essere principalmente... Scopri di più
